This paper presents the design, analysis and experimental study of a loading system for heavy-duty nodes test based on a large-scale multi-directional in-plane loading device, which has been used in a full-scale heavy-duty support node test. Test loads of the support reached 6 567 kN with multi-directional loading requirements, which outrange the capacity of the available loading devices. Through the reinforcement of a large-scale multi-directional inplane loading device, the innovative design of a self-balanced load transferring device, and other arrangement considerations of the loading system, the test was implemented and the loading capacity of the ring was considerably enlarged. Due to the heavy loading requirements, some checking computations of the ring and the load transferring device outranged the limit of the Chinese national code "Code for Design of Steel Structures (GB 50017—2003)", thus elastic-plastic finite element (FE) analysis was carried out on the two devices, and also the real-time monitoring on the whole loading systems during experiments to ensure test safety. FE analysis and test results show that the loading system worked elastically during experiments. 展开更多

This paper proposes an explicit scheme to analyze the failure of a subsea polyhedral tunnel-liner system with an inverted arch under mechanical loading and fire fields. The thin-walled liner is made of Functionally Graded Materials(FGMs),which may improve the stability behavior of the tunnel-liner system.Hydrostatic pressure is inevitable in the liner since underground water may penetrate the cracks of the tunnel, and reach the outer surface of the liner. In addition,an elevated temperature loading is taken into account, considering that fire may occur in the tunnel-liner system.Under the combination of mechanical loading and thermal loading, the liner deforms into a single-lobe shape, which is depicted by a trigonometric function. The total potential energy is expressed quantitatively after the energy approach and thin-walled shell theory are used. The minimum potential energy is obtained when the critical buckling occurs. The critical buckling pressure is calculated, which considers the effect of the thermal field. The present analytical prediction is subsequently compared precisely with other closed-form solutions. Finally, the effects of several parameters, such as the geometric shapes, temperature variations, and volume fraction indices, are discussed to further survey the buckling performance of the nonlinear buckling of an FGM polyhedral liner with an inverted arch. One may address a polyhedral liner with fewer polyhedral sides, and a lower volume fraction index is recommended to rehabilitate cracked tunnels in engineering applications. 展开更多

The current single-atom catalysts(SACs)for medicine still suffer from the limited active site density. Here,we develop a synthetic method capable of increasing both the metal loading and mass-specific activity of SACs by exchanging zinc with iron. The constructed iron SACs(h^(3)-FNC)with a high metal loading of 6.27 wt%and an optimized adjacent Fe distance of~4 A exhibit excellent oxidase-like catalytic performance without significant activity decay after being stored for six months and promising antibacterial effects.Attractively,a“density effect”has been found at a high-enough metal doping amount,at which individual active sites become close enough to interact with each other and alter the electronic structure, resulting in significantly boosted intrinsic activity of single-atomic iron sites in h^(3)-FNCs by 2.3 times compared to low-and medium-loading SACs.Consequently, the overall catalytic activity of h^(3)-FNC is highly improved, with mass activity and metal mass-specific activity that are,respectively,66 and 315 times higher than those of commercial Pt/C.In addition,h^(3)-FNCs demonstrate efficiently enhanced capability in catalyzing oxygen reduction into superoxide anion(O_(2)·^(−))and glutathione(GSH)depletion. Both in vitro and in vivo assays demonstrate the superior antibacterial efficacy of h^(3)-FNCs in promoting wound healing. This work presents an intriguing activity-enhancement effect in catalysts and exhibits impressive therapeutic efficacy in combating bacterial infections. 展开更多

In this paper,a bilevel optimization model of an integrated energy operator(IEO)–load aggregator(LA)is constructed to address the coordinate optimization challenge of multiple stakeholder island integrated energy system(IIES).The upper level represents the integrated energy operator, and the lower level is the electricity-heatgas load aggregator.Owing to the benefit conflict between the upper and lower levels of the IIES,a dynamic pricing mechanism for coordinating the interests of the upper and lower levels is proposed, combined with factors such as the carbon emissions of the IIES,as well as the lower load interruption power. The price of selling energy can be dynamically adjusted to the lower LA in the mechanism, according to the information on carbon emissions and load interruption power.Mutual benefits and win-win situations are achieved between the upper and lower multistakeholders. Finally,CPLEX is used to iteratively solve the bilevel optimization model. The optimal solution is selected according to the joint optimal discrimination mechanism.Thesimulation results indicate that the sourceload coordinate operation can reduce the upper and lower operation costs.Using the proposed pricingmechanism, the carbon emissions and load interruption power of IEO-LA are reduced by 9.78%and 70.19%,respectively,and the capture power of the carbon capture equipment is improved by 36.24%.The validity of the proposed model and method is verified. 展开更多

The attenuation of the acoustic activity in marble specimens under uniaxial compressive loadingunloading loops is quantified in juxtaposition to that of the electric activity. In parallel, the existence of"pre-failure indiceso"warning about entrance into a critical stage, that of impending fracture,is explored. The acoustic activity is quantified in terms of the normalized number of acoustic hits, their average rate of production and their cumulative energy, and, the cumulative counts and their average rate of change. The electric activity is studied in terms of the pressure stimulated currents and the electric charge released. The analysis revealed that the acoustic and electric activities are linearly correlated to each other, suggesting that they are different manifestations of the same damage mechanisms. In addition,Kaiser's effect, governing the acoustic activity,is found to govern, also, the electric activity. Moreover,it is concluded that entrance into the critical stage is safely predicted by means of a simple criterion, based on the evolution of the average rate of change of the normalized cumulative counts in the natural time domain. These predictions are almost identical with those of the criterion based on the "varianceo" and the "entropies" of the time series of acoustic events in this domain. 展开更多

Non-seismically designed(NSD)beam-column joints are susceptible to joint shear failure under seismic loads.Although significant research is available on the seismic behavior of such joints of planar frames, the information on the seismic behavior of joints of space frames(3D joints)is insufficient. The 3D joints are subjected to bi-directional excitation, which results in an interaction between the shear strength obtained for the joint in the two orthogonal directions separately. The bi-directional seismic behavior of corner reinforced concrete(RC)joints is the focus of this study.First,a detailed finite element(FE)model using the FE software Abaqus,is developed and validated using the test results from the literature. The validated modeling procedure is used to conduct a parametric study to investigate the influence of different parameters such as concrete strength, dimensions of main and transverse beams framing into the joint, presence or absence of a slab, axial load ratio and loading direction on the seismic behavior of joints.By subjecting the models to different combinations of loads on the beams along perpendicular directions, the interaction of the joint shear strength in two orthogonal directions is studied. The comparison of the interaction curves of the joints obtained from the numerical study with a quadratic(circular)interaction curve indicates that in a majority of cases, the quadratic interaction model can represent the strength interaction diagrams of RC beam to column connections with governing joint shear failure reasonably well. 展开更多

The fracture behavior of natural fracture in the geological reservoir subjected to filling property, affects the crack initiation and propagation under stress perturbation.Partial filling flaws were intermediate between open fractures and filled fractures, the fracture response may be worth exploring. In this work, the effect of the filling property of sandstone with partial filling flaws on the fracture behavior was systematically investigated based on three-point bending tests and the numerical approach of discrete element method(DEM).In the laboratory,semi-circular three-point bending tests were carried out with partial filling flaws of various filling strengths.Based on this, numerical simulations were used to further investigate the effect of the filling ratio and the inclination of the partial filling flaw on the mechanical and fracture responses, and the effect of the partial filling flaw under mixed-mode loading on the fracture mechanism was elucidated coupled with acoustic emission(AE)characteristics. The obtained results showed that the increase in filling strength and filling ratio of partial filling flaw led to an increase in peak strength, with a decreasing trend in peak strength with the inclination of partial filling flaw.In terms of crack propagation pattern, the increasing filling strength of the partial filling flaw induced the transformation of the fracture mechanism toward deflection, with a tortuosity path, while the filling ratio and inclination of partial filling flaw led to fracture mechanism change from deflection to penetration and attraction, accompanied with a larger AE event source in filler.Accordingly, the b-value based on the Gutenberg-Richter equation fluctuated between 5 and 4 at low filling ratio and inclination and remained around 5 at high filling ratio and inclination of partial filling flaw.Related results may provide an application prospective for reservoir stimulation using the natural fracture system. 展开更多

Controllable shock wave fracturing is an innovative engineering technique used for shale reservoir fracturing and reformation.Understanding the anisotropic fracture mechanism of shale under impact loading is vital for optimizing shock wave fracturing equipment and enhancing shale oil production. In this study, using the well-known notched semi-circular bend(NSCB)sample and the novel double-edge notched flattened Brazilian disc(DNFBD)sample combined with a split Hopkinson pressure bar(SHPB),various dynamic anisotropic fracture properties of Lushan shale, including failure characteristics, fracture toughness, energy dissipation and crack propagation velocity, are comprehensively compared and discussed under mode Ⅰ and mode Ⅱ fracture scenarios.First, using a newly modified fracture criterion considering the strength anisotropy of shale, the DNFBD specimen is predicted to be a robust method for true mode Ⅱ fracture of anisotropic shale rocks. Our experimental results show that the dynamic mode Ⅱ fracture of shale induces a rougher and more complex fracture morphology and performs a higher fracture toughness or fracture energy compared to dynamic mode Ⅰ fracture. The minimal fracture toughness or fracture energy occurs in the Short-transverse orientation, while the maximal ones occur in the Divider orientation. In addition,it is interesting to find that the mode Ⅱ fracture toughness anisotropy index decreases more slowly than that in the mode Ⅰ fracture scenario. These results provide significant insights for understanding the different dynamic fracture mechanisms of anisotropic shale rocks under impact loading and have some beneficial implications for the controllable shock wave fracturing technique. 展开更多

It is important to analyze the damage evolution process of surrounding rock under different water content for the stability of engineering rock mass.Based on digital speckle correlation(DSCM),acoustic emission(AE)and electromagnetic radiation(EMR),uniaxial hierarchical cyclic loading and unloading tests were carried out on sandstones with different fracture numbers under dry, natural and saturated water content,to explore the fracture propagation, failure precursor characteristics and damage response mechanism under the influence of water content effect. The results show that with the increase of water content, the peak stress and crack initiation stress decrease gradually, and the decreases are 15.28%-21.11%and 17.64%-23.04%,respectively.The peak strain and crack initiation strain increase gradually, and the increases are 19.85%-44.53%and 19.15%-41.94%,respectively.The precracked rock with different water content is mainly characterized by tensile failure at different loading stages. However, with the increase of water content, the proportion of shear cracks gradually increases, while acoustic emission events gradually decrease, the dissipative energy and energy storage limits of the rock under peak load gradually decrease, and the charge signal increases significantly, which is because the lubrication effect of water reduces the friction coefficient between crack surfaces. 展开更多

Salt cavern energy storage technology contributes to energy reserves and renewable energy scale-up.This study focuses on salt cavern gas storage in Jintan to assess the long-term stability of its surrounding rock under frequent operation. The fatigue test results indicate that stress holding significantly reduces fatigue life, with the magnitude of stress level outweighing the duration of holding time in determining peak strain.Employing a machine learning approach, the impact of various factors on fatigue life and peak strain was quantified, revealing that higher stress limits and stress holding adversely impact the fatigue index, whereas lower stress limits and rate exhibit a positive effect.A novel fatigue-creep composite damage constitutive model is constructed, which is able to consider stress magnitude, rate, and stress holding. The model, validated through multi-path tests, accurately captures the elasto-viscous behavior of salt rock during loading, unloading, and stress holding.Sensitivity analysis further reveals the time-and stress-dependent behavior of model parameters, clarifying that strain changes stem not only from stress variations but are also influenced by alterations in elasto-viscous parameters. This study provides a new method for the mechanical assessment of salt cavern gas storage surrounding rocks. 展开更多

Deep rock is under a complex geological environment with high geo-stress, high pore pressure, and strong dynamic disturbance. Understanding the dynamic response of rocks under coupled hydraulic-mechanical loading is thus essential in evaluating the stability and safety of subterranean engineering structures. Nevertheless, the constraints in experimental techniques have led to limited prior investigations into the dynamic compression behavior of rocks subjected to simultaneous high in-situ stress and pore pressure conditions. This study utilizes a triaxial split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) system in conjunction with a pore pressure loading cell to conduct dynamic experiments on rocks subjected to hydraulic-mechanical loading. A porous green sandstone (GS) was adopted as the testing rock material. The findings reveal that the dynamic behavior of rock specimens is significantly influenced by multiple factors, including the loading rate, confining stress, and pore pressure. Specifically, the dynamic compressive strength of GS exhibits an increase with higher loading rates and greater confining pressures, while it decreases with elevated pore pressure. Moreover, the classical Ashby-Sammis micromechanical model was augmented to account for dynamic loading and pore pressure considerations. By deducing the connection between crack length and damage evolution, the resulting law of crack expansion rate is related to the strain rate. In addition, the influence of hydraulic factors on the stress intensity factor at the crack tip is introduced. Thereby, a dynamic constitutive model for deep rocks under coupled hydraulic-mechanical loading was established and then validated against the experimental results. Subsequently, the characteristics of introduced parameter for quantifying the water-induced effects were carefully discussed. 展开更多

The fracture network of hydraulic crack is significantly influenced by the bedding plane in coalbed methane extraction.Under mode Ⅱ loading, crack deflection holds a key position in hydraulic cracking, especially in hydraulic shearing. This study first analyzed the crack deflection theory of layered rock. The semi-circle bending test under asymmetric loading is performed, and the four-dimensional Lattice Spring Model(4D-LSM)is established to examine how the bedding parameters affect coal crack propagation under mode Ⅱ dominant loads. The 4D-LSM results are comparable to the coal loading test results under quasi-mode Ⅱ and the analytical prediction of crack deflection theory.During mode Ⅱ loading, the coal crack propagation is greatly influenced by the angle, strength, and elastic modulus of the bedding plane, while the effects of thickness and spacing of bedding are insignificant. The crack of coal tends to propagate towards the bedding, following a decrease in bedding angle,a decrease in bedding strength, and an increase in elastic modulus. With higher bedding strength, spacing, and thickness, the peak load on the coal sample is higher. The influences of bedding strength, elastic modulus, spacing, and thickness on the peak load of coal samples and its anisotropy gradually decrease. It is proved that compared with the tangential stress ratio and traditional energy release ratio theories, the corrected energy release ratio criterion can more accurately predict the direction of crack deflection of coal, especially under mode Ⅱ loading. The results can provide assistance in the design of initiation pressure and fracturing direction in coal seam hydraulic fracturing. 展开更多

Preexisting cracks inside tight sandstones are one of the most important properties for controlling the mechanical and seepage behaviors.During the cyclic loading process, the rock generally exhibits obvious memorability and irreversible plastic deformation, even in the linear elastic stage. The assessment of the evolution of preexisting cracks under hydrostatic pressure loading and unloading processes is helpful in understanding the mechanism of plastic deformation. In this study, ultrasonic measurements were conducted on two tight sandstone specimens with different bedding orientations subjected to hydrostatic loading and unloading processes. The P-wave velocity was characterized by a similar response with the volumetric strain to the hydrostatic pressure and showed different strain sensitivities at different loading and unloading stages.A numerical model based on the discrete element method(DEM)was proposed to quantitatively clarify the evolution of the crack distribution under different hydrostatic pressures. The numerical model was verified by comparing the evolution of the measured P-wave velocities on two anisotropic specimens. The irreversible plastic deformation that occurred during the hydrostatic unloading stage was mainly due to the permanent closure of plastic-controlled cracks. The closure and reopening of cracks with a small aspect ratio account for the major microstructure evolution during the hydrostatic loading and unloading processes.Such evolution of microcracks is highly dependent on the stress path. The anisotropy of the crack distribution plays an important role in the magnitude and strain sensitivity of the P-wave velocity under stress conditions. The study can provide insight into the microstructure evolution during cyclic loading and unloading processes. 展开更多

To investigate the influence of different longitudinal constraint systems on the longitudinal displacement at the girder ends of a three-tower suspension bridge, this study takes the Cangrong Xunjiang Bridge as an engineering case for finite element analysis. This bridge employs an unprecedented tower-girder constraintmethod, with all vertical supports placed at the transition piers at both ends. This paper aims to study the characteristics of longitudinal displacement control at the girder ends under this novel structure, relying on finite element(FE)analysis.Initially, based on the Weigh In Motion(WIM)data,a random vehicle load model is generated and applied to the finite elementmodel.Several longitudinal constraint systems are proposed, and their effects on the structural response of the bridge are compared. The most reasonable system, balancing girder-end displacement and transitional pier stress,is selected.Subsequently, the study examines the impact of different viscous damper parameters on key structural response indicators, including cumulative longitudinal displacement at the girder ends, maximum longitudinal displacement at the girder ends, cumulative longitudinal displacement at the pier tops, maximum longitudinal displacement at the pier tops, longitudinal acceleration at the pier tops, and maximum bending moment at the pier bottoms. Finally, the coefficient of variation(CV)-TOPSIS method is used to optimize the viscous damper parameters for multiple objectives. The results show that adding viscous dampers at the side towers,in addition to the existing longitudinal limit bearings at the central tower, can most effectively reduce the response of structural indicators. The changes in these indicators are not entirely consistent with variations in damping coefficient and velocity exponent. The damper parameters significantly influence cumulative longitudinal displacement at the girder ends, cumulative longitudinal displacement at the pier tops, and maximum bending moments at the pier bottoms. The optimal damper parameters are found to be a damping coefficient of 5000 kN/(m/s)0.2 and a velocity exponent of 0.2. 展开更多

Tensile cracking is a predominant mode of failure in rocks within underground resource excavation and engineering structures, where rocks are frequently subjected to dynamic disturbances while simultaneously experiencing in-situ stresses. This paper proposes a new dynamic split tension setup utilising a cubic specimen to investigate the dynamic behaviour of rocks across various tensile strain rates and confining pressures. The objective is to extend the applicability of the triaxial Hopkinson bar in studying dynamic behaviour of geomaterials. For comparison, the dynamic Brazilian disc(BD)tests were performed using three rock types(e.g.,sandstone,granite and marble)under different strain rates ranging from 10^(−3)∼10^(2) s^(−1).Besides,the Digital Image Correlation(DIC)technique was adopted to measure full-field real-time tensile strain of rocks and demonstrated that tensile crack initiated at the middle part and split the specimen into two similar halves.Effects of specimen size, geometry, loading rate as well as the confining pressure are investigated in detail. The dynamic fracture behaviours, including dynamic tensile strength, tensile strain, time to fracture and dynamic increase factor(DIF),were characterised for the rocks. It is found that dynamic tensile strength of rock minimal dependence on size and geometry but is significantly influenced by loading rate and confinement. It exhibited a linear increase with strain rate(10^(0)∼10^(2) s^(−1))and demonstrated a nonlinear growth with lateral confinement from 0 to 15 MPa.The nonlinear dependency on confinement can be attributed to the restriction imposed on the opening and propagation of tensile cracks due to the presence of confinement. These findings enhance our understanding of the safety aspects associated with underground rock excavations, particularly in situations where considering in-situ stress is crucial for evaluating the dynamic tensile failure of rocks. 展开更多
