Heat treatment processes, such as annealing and quenching, are crucial in determining residual stress evolution, microstructural changes and mechanical properties of metallic materials, with residual stresses playing a greater role in the performance of components. This paper investigates the effect of heat treatment on residual stresses induced in AISI 1025, manufactured using LENS. Finite element model was developed and simulated to analyze residual stress development. AISI 1025 samples suitable for tool and die applications in Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) filament production, were fabricated using Laser Engineered Net Shaping (LENS) process, followed by heat treatment where annealing and quenching processes were done. The material’s microstructure, residual stress and hardness of heat-treated samples under investigation, were compared against the as-built samples. The results indicated that after annealing, tensile residual stresses were reduced by 93%, resulting in a reduced crack growth rate, compared to the as-built sample, although the hardness was reduced significantly by 25%. On the other hand, high tensile residual stresses of 425 ± 14 MPa were recorded after quenching process with an improvement of hardness by 21%. 展开更多

The seepage of groundwater and the strain-softening of rock mass in a submarine tunnel expand the plastic region of rock, thereby affecting its overall stability. It is therefore essential to study the stress and strain fields in the rocks surrounding the submarine tunnel by considering the coupled effect of strainsoftening and seepage. However, the evolution equation for the hydro-mechanical parameters in the existing fully coupled solution is a uniform equation that is unable to reproduce the characteristics of rock mass in practice. In this study,an updated numerical procedure for the submarine tunnel is derived by coupling strain-softening and seepage effect based on the experimental results.According to the hydro-mechanical coupling theory, the hydro-mechanical parameters such as elastic modulus,Poisson's ratio,Biot's coefficient and permeability coefficient of rocks are characterized by the fitting equations derived from the experimental data. Then, the updated numerical procedure is deduced with the governing equations, boundary conditions, seepage equations and fitting equations. The updated numerical procedure is verified accurately compared with the previous analytical solution.By utilizing the updated numerical procedure, the characteristics of stress field and the influences of initial pore water pressure,Biot's coefficient, and permeability coefficient on the stress, displacement and water-inflow of the surrounding rocks are discussed.Regardless of the variations in hydro-mechanical parameters, the stress distribution has a similar trend. The initial permeability coefficient exerts the most significant influence on the stress field. With the increases in initial pore water pressure and Biot's coefficient, the plastic region expands, and the water-inflow and displacement increase accordingly.Given the fact that the stability of the tunnel is more sensitive to the seepage force controlled by the hydraulic parameters,it is suggested to dewater the ground above the submarine tunnel to control the initial pore water pressure. 展开更多

Landslides triggered by seismic activity have led to substantial human and economic losses.Nevertheless, the fundamental physical mechanisms underlying the vibration and rupture of rock slopes during earthquakes remain poorly understood. In this study, finite element method-based numerical simulations were conducted based on the rock slope at Dagangshan Hydropower Station in Sichuan province,China.Firstly, systematic analysis in both the time and frequency domains were performed to examine the seismic dynamic characteristics of the slope.Subsequently, the transfer function method and the multiple stepwise linear regression method were employed to clarify the underlying mechanism and determine critical factors influencing the slope instability during earthquakes.Time-domain analysis reveals that rock slope dynamic response exhibits notable elevation, surface, and local amplification effects.Specifically, the Peak Ground Acceleration(PGA)amplification coefficient(MPGA)is significantly higher at elevated locations, near the slope surface and in areas with protrusions. Moreover, the existence of fracture zones and anti-shear galleries minimally influences the dynamic responses but considerably affect the rupture.Specifically, fracture zones exacerbate rupture, while anti-shear galleries mitigate it.Frequency-domain analysis indicates that the dynamic responses of the slope are closely correlated with the degree of slope rupture. As earthquake magnitude increases, the rupture degree of the slope intensifies, and the dominant frequency of the response within the slope decreases,e.g.,its value shifts from 3.63 to 2.75 Hz at measurement point 9near the slope surface. The transfer function of rock slope, calculated under the excitation of wide flat spectrum white noise can reflect the interrelationships between the inherent properties and the rupture degree.Notably, the peak of the transfer function undergoes inversion as the degree of rupture increases.Furthermore, through multiple stepwise linear regression analysis, four key factors influencing the surface dynamic response of the slope were identified:rock strength, slope angle, elevation, and seismic dominant frequency. These findings provide valuable insights into the underlying mechanisms of rock slope dynamic responses triggered by earthquakes, offering essential guidance for understanding and mitigating seismic impacts on rock slopes. 展开更多

The pressure wave generated by an urban-rail vehicle when passing through a tunnel affects the comfort of passengersand may even cause damage to the train and related tunnel structures. Therefore, controlling the trainspeed in the tunnel is extremely important. In this study, this problem is investigated numerically in the frameworkof the standard k-εtwo-equation turbulence model. In particular,an eight-car urban rail train passingthrough a tunnel at different speeds(140,160,180 and 200 km/h)is considered. The results show that the maximumaerodynamic drag of the head and tail cars is most affected by the running speed. The pressure at selectedmeasuring points on the windward side of the head car is very high, and the negative pressure at the side windowof the driver’s cab of the tail car is also very large. From the head car to the tail car,the pressure at the same heightgradually decreases. The positive pressure peak at the head car and the negative pressure peak at the tail car aregreatly affected by the speed. 展开更多

Understanding the fracture behavior of rocks subjected to temperature and accounting for the rock's texture is vital for safe and efficient design.Prior studies have often focused on isolated aspects of rock fracture behavior, neglecting the combined influence of grain size and temperature on fracture behavior. This study employs specimens based on the particle flow code-grain based model to scrutinize the influence of temperature and grain size discrepancies on the fracture characteristics of sandstone. In pursuit of this goal,we manufactured ninety-six semi-circular bend specimens with grain sizes spanning from 0.5 mm to 1.5 mm,predicated on the mineral composition of sandstone.Recognizing the significance of intra-granular and inter-granular fractures, the grains were considered deformable and susceptible to breakage. The numerical model was calibrated using the results of uniaxial compressive strength(UCS)and Brazilian tests. We implemented thermo-mechanical coupled analysis to simulate mode Ⅰ,mode Ⅱ,and mixed mode(Ⅰ-Ⅱ)fracture toughness tests and subsequently studied alterations in the fracture behavior of sandstone at temperatures from 25℃ to 700℃.Our findings revealed increased fracture toughness as the temperature escalated from 25℃ to 200℃.However,beyond the threshold of 200℃,we noted a decline in fracture toughness.More specifically, the drop in mode Ⅰ fracture toughness was more pronounced in specimens with finer grains than those with coarser grains.Contrarily, the trend was reversed for mode Ⅱ fracture toughness. In contrast, the reduction of mixed mode(Ⅰ-Ⅱ)fracture toughness seemed almost linear across all grain sizes.Furthermore,we identified a correlation between temperature and grain size and their collective impact on crack propagation patterns.Comparing our results with established theoretical benchmarks,we confirmed that both temperature and grain size variations influence the fracture envelopes of sandstone. 展开更多

Smelting with oxygen bottom blowing is one of the main methods used in the frame of copper pyrometallurgy. With this approach, feed materials and oxygen-enriched air are introduced in reversed order to enhance multiphaseflow within the furnace.Understanding the flow structure and temperature distribution in this setup is crucial foroptimizing production. In this study,gas-liquid interactions, and temperature profiles under varying air-injectionconditions are examined by means of numerical simulation for a 3.2 m×20 m furnace. The results indicate that thehigh-velocity regions are essentially distributed near the lance within the reaction region and the flue gas outlet, while low-velocity regions are located close to the furnace walls on both side of the reaction region.Dead regionsappear in the sedimentation region, with gas velocities surpassing those of the molten phase. As the injection rateincreases from 0.50 to 0.80 Nm3/s,the stabilization time of the average liquid surface velocity decreases from 2.6 sto 1.9 s,exhibiting a similar trend to the gas holdup.During stabilization, the average liquid surface velocity risesfrom 0.505 to 0.702 m/s.The average turbulent kinetic energy(TKE)of the fluid in the molten bath increases from0.095 to 0.162 m^(2)/s^(2).The proportion of the area distribution with TKE greater than 0.10 m^(2)/s^(2) and the gas holdupat steady state both rise with an increase in the injection quantity. The maximum splashing height of the melt growsfrom approximately 0.756 to 1.154 m,with the affected area expanding from 14.239 to 20.498 m^(2).Under differentworking conditions with varying injection quantities, the average temperature changes in melt zone and flue gaszone of the furnace are small. The temperature in the melt and in the flue-gas zone spans the interval 1200℃–1257℃,and 1073℃–1121℃,respectively.The temperature distribution of the melt and flue gas reveals a patterncharacterized by elevated temperatures in the reaction zone, gradually transitioning to lower temperatures in thesedimentation region. 展开更多

Accurate skin temperature is one of the critical factors in successfully assimilating satellite radiance data over land.However,model-simulated skin temperature may not be accurate enough. To address this issue,an extended skin temperature control variable(TSCV) approach is proposed in a variational assimilation framework, which also considers the background error correlation between skin temperature and atmospheric variables.A series of single observation tests and a 10-day cycling assimilation experiment were conducted to evaluate the impact of the TSCV approach on the assimilation of AMSU-A and ATMS(Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder) microwave temperature-sounding channels over land. The results of the single observation tests show that by applying the TSCV approach, not only the direct analysis of skin temperature is realized, but also the interaction between skin temperature and atmospheric variables can be achieved during the assimilation process. The results of the cycling experiment demonstrate that the TSCV approach improves the skin temperature analysis, which in turn reduces the RMSE of the surface variables and low-level air temperature forecasts. The TSCV approach also reduces the difference between the observed and simulated brightness temperatures of both microwave and infrared window channels over land, suggesting that the approach can facilitate the radiance simulation of these channels, thus contributing to the assimilation of window channels. 展开更多

Understanding water dynamics under the effect of climatic conditions is important to improve water sustainability over the medium-and long-term.Clay content can affect soil hydrothermal properties, and hence modify water and heat exchange between soil and atmosphere,e.g.evapotranspiration and infiltration. This work aims to develop a numerical approach to explore the influence of clay content on soil hydrothermal response to the timely climatic conditions in the Lake Chad region,Sahel Region of west-central Africa. The meteorological information at the studied points,i.e.points A and B with a clay content of 8.3%and 25%,during the year 2008 is collected from ERA5-Land hourly data. The numerical results allow for understanding the effect of clay content on the hydrothermal response of the surface soil layer.Specifically, the soil surface temperature under point A is lower than that under point B during the dry season due to the dominant effect of heat conduction. However, the converse tendency is observed during the wet season because of the combined effect of heat conduction and latent heat. The variations of soil volumetric water content are closely related to the timely interaction between the soil and atmosphere,in addition to the hydrothermal properties of soil. Moreover, the outcomes of this work improve the understanding of the heat and water dynamics under the effect of climatic conditions and clay content, and provide further insights into the potential water protection in arid and semi-arid regions in the future. 展开更多

Experimental studies were conducted on two high-strength steel plate-frame structures with different truss spacings under various impact velocities to investigate the dynamic mechanical properties of hull plate-frame structures under drop weight impact. The results showed that decreasing the main beam spacing can effectively increase the structural stiffness, reduce the maximum deformation, and increase the damage range.Furthermore,to simulate the impact tests accurately, static and dynamic tensile tests at different strain rates were carried out,and the Cowper-Symonds model parameters were fitted via experimental data. The material properties obtained from the tensile tests were used as inputs for numerical simulations with the numerical results coincide with the experimental results.A systematic analysis and discussion were conducted on the effects of truss spacing and truss width on the dynamic response of the reinforced plates, and an optimal range for the ratio of truss spacing to truss width was proposed. In addition,a mesh size sensitivity analysis for ship hull plate frame collision simulations was performed. The applicability of the EPS,MMC,and RTCL failure criteria in the simulation of plate-frame structures was investigated via finite element simulations of falling weight impact tests. The research findings provide a reference for ship hull structure design and resilience assessment. 展开更多

To address the problems of low accuracy by the CONWEP model and poor efficiency by the Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian(CEL)method in predicting close-range air blast loads of cylindrical charges,a neural network-based simulation(NNS)method with higher accuracy and better efficiency was proposed. The NNS method consisted of three main steps.First, the parameters of blast loads, including the peak pressures and impulses of cylindrical charges with different aspect ratios(L/D)at different stand-off distances and incident angles were obtained by two-dimensional numerical simulations.Subsequently, incident shape factors of cylindrical charges with arbitrary aspect ratios were predicted by a neural network. Finally, reflected shape factors were derived and implemented into the subroutine of the ABAQUS code to modify the CONWEP model, including modifications of impulse and overpressure. The reliability of the proposed NNS method was verified by related experimental results.Remarkable accuracy improvement was acquired by the proposed NNS method compared with the unmodified CONWEP model. Moreover, huge efficiency superiority was obtained by the proposed NNS method compared with the CEL method. The proposed NNS method showed good accuracy when the scaled distance was greater than 0.2 m/kg^(1/3).It should be noted that there is no need to generate a new dataset again since the blast loads satisfy the similarity law,and the proposed NNS method can be directly used to simulate the blast loads generated by different cylindrical charges. The proposed NNS method with high efficiency and accuracy can be used as an effective method to analyze the dynamic response of structures under blast loads, and it has significant application prospects in designing protective structures. 展开更多

Sea topography information holds significant importance in oceanic research and the climate change detection.Radar imaging altimetry has emerged as the leading approach for global ocean observation, employing synthetic aperture radar(SAR)interferometry to enhance the spatial resolution of Sea topography.Nevertheless, current payload capacity and satellite hardware limitations prevent the extension of the interferometric baseline by enlarging the physical antenna size. This constraint hinders achieving centimeter-level accuracy in interferometric altimetry. To address this challenge,we conducted a numerical simulation to assess the viability of a large baseline interferometric imaging altimeter(LB-IIA).By controlling the baseline within the range of 600-1000 m through spiral orbit design in two satellites and mitigating baseline de-correlation with the carrier frequency shift(CFS)technique,we aimed to overcome the above limitations. Our findings demonstrate the efficacy of the CFS technique in compensating for baseline decoherence, elevating coherence from less than 0.1 to over 0.85.Concurrently.The height difference accuracy between neighboring sea surfaces reaches 1 cm within a 1 km resolution. This study is anticipated to serve as a foundational reference for future interferometric imaging altimeter development, catering to the demand for high-precision sea topography data in accurate global bathymetry inversion. 展开更多

The multi-scale modeling combined with the cohesive zone model(CZM)and the molecular dynamics(MD)method were preformed to simulate the crack propagation in NiTi shape memory alloys(SMAs).The metallographic microscope and image processing technology were employed to achieve a quantitative grain size distribution of NiTi alloys so as to provide experimental data for molecular dynamics modeling at the atomic scale.Considering the size effect of molecular dynamics model on material properties,a reasonable modeling size was provided by taking into account three characteristic dimensions from the perspective of macro, meso, and micro scales according to the Buckinghamπtheorem. Then, the corresponding MD simulation on deformation and fracture behavior was investigated to derive a parameterized traction-separation(T-S)law,and then it was embedded into cohesive elements of finite element software. Thus, the crack propagation behavior in NiTi alloys was reproduced by the finite element method(FEM).The experimental results show that the predicted initiation fracture toughness is in good agreement with experimental data.In addition,it is found that the dynamics initiation fracture toughness increases with decreasing grain size and increasing loading velocity. 展开更多

Polymer-blend geocell sheets(PBGS)have been developed as substitute materials for manufacturing geocells.Various attempts have been made to test and predict the behaviors of commonly used geogrids, geotextiles, geomembranes, and geocells. However, the elastic-viscoplastic behaviors of novel-developed geocell sheets are still poorly understood. Therefore, this paper investigates the elastic-viscoplastic behaviors of PBGS to gain a comprehensive understanding of their mechanical properties.Furthermore, the tensile load-strain history under various loading conditions is simulated by numerical calculation for widespread utilization. To achieve this goal, monotonic loading tests,short-term creep and stress relaxation tests, and multi-load-path tests(also known as arbitrary loading history tests)are performed using a universal testing machine. The results are simulated using the nonlinear three-component(NLTC)model,which consists of three nonlinear components,i.e.a hypo-elastic component,a nonlinear inviscid component, and a nonlinear viscid component. The experimental and numerical results demonstrate that PBGS exhibit significant elastic-viscoplastic behavior that can be accurately predicted by the NLTC model. Moreover, the tensile strain rates significantly influence the tensile load, with higher strain rates resulting in increased tensile loads and more linear load-strain curves. Also, parametric analysis of the rheological characteristics reveals that the initial tensile strain rates have negligible impact on the results. The rate-sensitivity coefficient of PBGS is approximately 0.163,which falls within the typical range observed in most geosynthetics. 展开更多

In order to understand the dynamics of granular flow on an erodible base soil,in this paper,a series of material point method-based granular column collapse tests were conducted to investigate numerically the mobility and dynamic erosion process of granular flow subjected to the complex settings,i.e.,the aspect ratio, granular mass, friction and dilatancy resistance, gravity and presence of water.A set of power scaling laws were proposed to describe the final deposit characteristics of granular flow by the relations of the normalized run-out distance and the normalized final height of granular flow against the aspect ratio, being greatly affected by the complex geological settings,e.g.,granular mass, the friction and dilatancy resistance of granular soil, and presence of water in granular flow.An index of the coefficient of friction of granular soil was defined as a ratio of the target coefficient of friction over the initial coefficient of friction to quantify the scaling extent of friction change(i.e.,friction strengthening or weakening). There is a characteristic aspect ratio of granular column corresponding to the maximum mobility of granular flow with the minimum index of the apparent coefficient of friction. The index of the repose coefficient of friction of granular flow decreased gradually with the increase in aspect ratio because higher potential energy of granular column at a larger aspect ratio causes a larger kinetic energy of granular soil to weaken the friction of granular soil as a kind of velocity-related friction weakening. An increase in granular mass reduces gradually the indexes of the apparent and repose coefficients of friction of granular soil to enhance the mobility of granular flow. The mobility of granular flow increases gradually with the decrease in friction angle or increase in dilatancy angle of granular soil. However, the increase of gravity accelerates granular flow but showing the same final deposit profile without any dependence on gravity. The mobility of granular flow increases gradually by lowering the indexes of the apparent and repose coefficients of friction of granular flow while changing the surroundings,in turn, the dry soil, submerged soil and saturated soil, implying a gradually increased excessive mobility of granular flow with the friction weakening of granular soil.Presence of water in granular flow may be a potential catalyzer to yield a long run-out granular flow,as revealed in comparison of water-absent and water-present granular flows. In addition, the dynamic erosion and entrainment of based soil induced by granular flow subjected to the complex geological settings,i.e.,the aspect ratio, granular mass, gravity, friction and dilatancy resistance, and presence of water, were comprehensively investigated as well. 展开更多

For the safety of railroad operations, sand barriers are utilized to mitigate wind-sand disaster effects. These disasters, characterized by multi-directional wind patterns, result in diverse angles among the barriers. In this study, using numerical simulations,we examined the behavior of High Density Polyethylene(HDPE)sheet sand barriers under different wind angles, focusing on flow field distribution, windproof efficiency, and sedimentation erosion dynamics. This study discovered that at a steady wind speed, airflow velocity varies as the angle between the airflow and the HDPE barrier changes.Specifically,a 90°angle results in the widest low-speed airflow area on the barrier’s downwind side.If the airflow is not perpendicular to the barrier,it prompts a lateral airflow movement which decreases as the angle expands. The windproof efficiency correlates directly with this angle but inversely with the wind’s speed.Notably, with a wind angle of 90°,wind speed drops by 81%.The minimum wind speed is found at 5.1H(the sand barrier height)on the barrier’s downwind side.As the angle grows, the barrier’s windproof efficiency improves, extending its protective reach.Sedimentation is most prominent on the barrier’s downwind side,as the wind angle shifts from 30°to 90°,the sand sedimentation area on the barrier’s downwind side enlarges by 14.8H.As the angle grows, sedimentation intensifies, eventually overtakes the forward erosion and enlarges the sedimentation area. 展开更多

We have proposed a methodology to assess the robustness of underground tunnels against potential failure. This involves developing vulnerability functions for various qualities of rock mass and static loading intensities. To account for these variations,we utilized a Monte Carlo Simulation(MCS)technique coupled with the finite difference code FLAC^(3D),to conduct two thousand seven hundred numerical simulations of a horseshoe tunnel located within a rock mass with different geological strength index system(GSIs)and subjected to different states of static loading. To quantify the severity of damage within the rock mass,we selected one stress-based(brittle shear ratio(BSR))and one strain-based failure criterion(plastic damage index(PDI)).Based on these criteria,we then developed fragility curves.Additionally,we used mathematical approximation techniques to produce vulnerability functions that relate the probabilities of various damage states to loading intensities for different quality classes of blocky rock mass. The results indicated that the fragility curves we obtained could accurately depict the evolution of the inner and outer shell damage around the tunnel. Therefore,we have provided engineers with a tool that can predict levels of damages associated with different failure mechanisms based on variations in rock mass quality and in situ stress state. Our method is a numerically developed,multi-variate approach that can aid engineers in making informed decisions about the robustness of underground tunnels. 展开更多

Due to their high reliability and cost-efficiency,submarine pipelines are widely used in offshore oil and gas resource engineering.Due to the interaction of waves, currents, seabed, and pipeline structures, the soil around submarine pipelines is prone to local scour, severely affecting their operational safety. With the Yellow River Delta as the research area and based on the renormalized group(RNG)k-εturbulence model and Stokes fifth-order wave theory, this study solves the Navier-Stokes(N-S)equation using the finite difference method. The volume of fluid(VOF)method is used to describe the fluid-free surface, and a threedimensional numerical model of currents and waves-submarine pipeline-silty sandy seabed is established. The rationality of the numerical model is verified using a self-built waveflow flume. On this basis,in this study, the local scour development and characteristics of submarine pipelines in the Yellow River Delta silty sandy seabed in the prototype environment are explored and the influence of the presence of pipelines on hydrodynamic features such as surrounding flow field, shear stress, and turbulence intensity is analyzed. The results indicate that(1)local scour around submarine pipelines can be divided into three stages:rapid scour, slow scour, and stable scour. The maximum scour depth occurs directly below the pipeline, and the shape of the scour pits is asymmetric.(2)As the water depth decreases and the pipeline suspension height increases, the scour becomes more intense.(3)When currents go through a pipeline,a clear stagnation point is formed in front of the pipeline, and the flow velocity is positively correlated with the depth of scour. This study can provide a valuable reference for the protection of submarine pipelines in this area. 展开更多

Deep shale reservoirs are characterized by elevated breakdown pressures, diminished fracture complexity, and reduced modified volumes compared to medium and shallow reservoirs. Therefore,it is urgent to investigate particular injection strategies that can optimize breakdown pressure and fracturing efficiency to address the increasing demands for deep shale reservoir stimulation. In this study, the efficiency of various stimulation strategies, including multi-cluster simultaneous fracturing, modified alternating fracturing, alternating shut-in fracturing, and cyclic alternating fracturing, was evaluated.Subsequently, the sensitivity of factors such as the cycle index,shut-in time, cluster spacing, and horizontal permeability was investigated.Additionally, the flow distribution effect within the wellbore was discussed. The results indicate that relative to multi-cluster simultaneous fracturing, modified alternating fracturing exhibits reduced susceptibility to the stress shadow effect, which results in earlier breakdown, extended hydraulic fracture lengths, and more consistent propagation despite an increase in breakdown pressure. The alternating shut-in fracturing benefits the increase of fracture length, which is closely related to the shut-in time.Furthermore, cyclic alternating fracturing markedly lowers breakdown pressure and contributes to uniform fracture propagation,in which the cycle count plays an important role.Modified alternating fracturing demonstrates insensitivity to variations in cluster spacing, whereas horizontal permeability is a critical factor affecting fracture length. The wellbore effect restrains the accumulation of pressure and flow near the perforation, delaying the initiation of hydraulic fractures. The simulation results can provide valuable numerical insights for optimizing injection strategies for deep shale hydraulic fracturing. 展开更多
