This paper proposes linear and nonlinear filters for a non-Gaussian dynamic system with an unknown nominal covariance of the output noise.The challenge of designing a suitable filter in the presence of an unknown cova...This paper proposes linear and nonlinear filters for a non-Gaussian dynamic system with an unknown nominal covariance of the output noise.The challenge of designing a suitable filter in the presence of an unknown covariance matrix is addressed by focusing on the output data set of the system.Considering that data generated from a Gaussian distribution exhibit ellipsoidal scattering,we first propose the weighted sum of norms(SON)clustering method that prioritizes nearby points,reduces distant point influence,and lowers computational cost.Then,by introducing the weighted maximum likelihood,we propose a semi-definite program(SDP)to detect outliers and reduce their impacts on each cluster.Detecting these weights paves the way to obtain an appropriate covariance of the output noise.Next,two filtering approaches are presented:a cluster-based robust linear filter using the maximum a posterior(MAP)estimation and a clusterbased robust nonlinear filter assuming that output noise distribution stems from some Gaussian noise resources according to the ellipsoidal clusters.At last,simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed filtering approaches.展开更多
Machine learning(ML)is a type of artificial intelligence that assists computers in the acquisition of knowledge through data analysis,thus creating machines that can complete tasks otherwise requiring human intelligen...Machine learning(ML)is a type of artificial intelligence that assists computers in the acquisition of knowledge through data analysis,thus creating machines that can complete tasks otherwise requiring human intelligence.Among its various applications,it has proven groundbreaking in healthcare as well,both in clinical practice and research.In this editorial,we succinctly introduce ML applications and present a study,featured in the latest issue of the World Journal of Clinical Cases.The authors of this study conducted an analysis using both multiple linear regression(MLR)and ML methods to investigate the significant factors that may impact the estimated glomerular filtration rate in healthy women with and without non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD).Their results implicated age as the most important determining factor in both groups,followed by lactic dehydrogenase,uric acid,forced expiratory volume in one second,and albumin.In addition,for the NAFLD-group,the 5th and 6th most important impact factors were thyroid-stimulating hormone and systolic blood pressure,as compared to plasma calcium and body fat for the NAFLD+group.However,the study's distinctive contribution lies in its adoption of ML methodologies,showcasing their superiority over traditional statistical approaches(herein MLR),thereby highlighting the potential of ML to represent an invaluable advanced adjunct tool in clinical practice and research.展开更多

Purpose:We aimed to measure the variation in researchers’knowledge and attitudes towards bibliometric indicators.The focus is on mapping the heterogeneity of this metric-wiseness within and between disciplines.Design...Purpose:We aimed to measure the variation in researchers’knowledge and attitudes towards bibliometric indicators.The focus is on mapping the heterogeneity of this metric-wiseness within and between disciplines.Design/methodology/approach:An exploratory survey is administered to researchers at the Sapienza University of Rome,one of Europe’s oldest and largest generalist universities.To measure metric-wiseness,we use attitude statements that are evaluated by a 5-point Likert scale.Moreover,we analyze documents of recent initiatives on assessment reform to shed light on how researchers’heterogeneous attitudes regarding and knowledge of bibliometric indicators are taken into account.Findings:We found great heterogeneity in researchers’metric-wiseness across scientific disciplines.In addition,within each discipline,we observed both supporters and critics of bibliometric indicators.From the document analysis,we found no reference to individual heterogeneity concerning researchers’metric wiseness.Research limitations:We used a self-selected sample of researchers from one Italian university as an exploratory case.Further research is needed to check the generalizability of our findings.Practical implications:To gain sufficient support for research evaluation practices,it is key to consider researchers’diverse attitudes towards indicators.Originality/value:We contribute to the current debate on reforming research assessment by providing a novel empirical measurement of researchers’knowledge and attitudes towards bibliometric indicators and discussing the importance of the obtained results for improving current research evaluation systems.展开更多

The paper concludes with a discussion of the key barriers to implementing reproducibility practices in transportation research and potential solutions. The barriers include existing culture and attitudes, data sensitivity, insufficient methodological detail, lack of code sharing, limited validation, additional time and research burden, and skill and knowledge gaps. Think-aloud protocols have drawn much attention over the past two decades.Given the expanse of the relevant literature,we narrow our focus on core papers on the application of this research method to EFL education res...Think-aloud protocols have drawn much attention over the past two decades.Given the expanse of the relevant literature,we narrow our focus on core papers on the application of this research method to EFL education research in China in the past 25 years,aiming to summarize the achievements of its application to EFL education rescarch and discover the problems in the current rescarch.In this systematic review,a total of 53 articles are retrieved.Adopting the methodologial synthesis,we analyze the artidles from the perspectives of the research trend,research arcas,rescarch design,data collection,data analysis,and presentation of results.It is found that the overall number of studies using think-aloud in EFL education is insufficient.The research using think aloud in EFL writing accounts for the highest proportion,while few studies on EFL listening and speaking via this research method are conducted.Tertiary-level students are the most popular participants in the studies using think aloud protocols.In addition,the descriptions of the data collection and data analysis processes are insuficient.Based on these findings,implications for teachers,curriculum designers,and researchers in EFL education are further discussed.展开更多

Purpose:Evaluating the quality of academic journal articles is a time consuming but critical task for national research evaluation exercises,appointments and promotion.It is therefore important to investigate whether ...Purpose:Evaluating the quality of academic journal articles is a time consuming but critical task for national research evaluation exercises,appointments and promotion.It is therefore important to investigate whether Large Language Models(LLMs)can play a role in this process.Design/methodology/approach:This article assesses which ChatGPT inputs(full text without tables,figures,and references;title and abstract;title only)produce better quality score estimates,and the extent to which scores are affected by ChatGPT models and system prompts.Findings:The optimal input is the article title and abstract,with average ChatGPT scores based on these(30 iterations on a dataset of 51 papers)correlating at 0.67 with human scores,the highest ever reported.ChatGPT 4o is slightly better than 3.5-turbo(0.66),and 4o-mini(0.66).Research limitations:The data is a convenience sample of the work of a single author,it only includes one field,and the scores are self-evaluations.Practical implications:The results suggest that article full texts might confuse LLM research quality evaluations,even though complex system instructions for the task are more effective than simple ones.Thus,whilst abstracts contain insufficient information for a thorough assessment of rigour,they may contain strong pointers about originality and significance.Finally,linear regression can be used to convert the model scores into the human scale scores,which is 31%more accurate than guessing.Originality/value:This is the first systematic comparison of the impact of different prompts,parameters and inputs for ChatGPT research quality evaluations.展开更多

Purpose:This study investigates whether publication-centric incentive systems,introduced through the National Scientific Accreditation(ASN:Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale)for professorships in Italy in 2012,contrib...Purpose:This study investigates whether publication-centric incentive systems,introduced through the National Scientific Accreditation(ASN:Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale)for professorships in Italy in 2012,contribute to adopting“salami publishing”strategies among Italian academics.Design/methodology/approach:A longitudinal bibliometric analysis was conducted on the publication records of over 25,000 Italian science professors to examine changes in publication output and the originality of their work following the implementation of the ASN.Findings:The analysis revealed a significant increase in publication output after the ASN’s introduction,along with a concurrent decline in the originality of publications.However,no evidence was found linking these trends to increased salami slicing practices among the observed researchers.Research limitations:Given the size of our observation field,we propose an innovative indirect approach based on the degree of originality of publications’bibliographies.We know that bibliographic coupling cannot capture salami publications per se,but only topically-related records.On the other hand,controlling for the author’s specialization level in the period,we believe that a higher level of bibliographic coupling in his scientific output can signal a change in his strategy of disseminating the results of his research.The relatively low R-squared values in our models(0.3-0.4)reflect the complexity of the phenomenon under investigation,revealing the presence of unmeasured factors influencing the outcomes,and future research should explore additional variables or alternative models that might account for a greater proportion of the variability.Despite this limitation,the significant predictors identified in our analysis provide valuable insights into the key factors driving the observed outcomes.Practical implications:The results of the study support those who argue that quantitative research assessment frameworks have had very positive effects and should not be dismissed,contrary to the claims of those evoking the occurrence of side effects that do not appear in the empirical analyses.Originality/value:This study provides empirical evidence on the impact of the ASN on publication behaviors in a huge micro-level dataset,contributing to the broader discourse on the effects of quantitative research assessments on academic publishing practices.展开更多
As a response to the complexity of modern health care,nursing education is undergoing significant transformation.This paper aims to explore changing dynamics in nursing education,highlighting trends,challenges,and the...As a response to the complexity of modern health care,nursing education is undergoing significant transformation.This paper aims to explore changing dynamics in nursing education,highlighting trends,challenges,and the potential of Design-Based Research(DBR)as a methodological approach for curricular enhancement.This study employed a qualitative synthesis methodology was utilised,employing a systematic literature analysis of peer-reviewed articles published from 2019 to 2023.Relevant studies were searched in primary databases such as PubMed,Scopus,and Google Scholar,using specific keywords pertaining to nursing education,innovative pedagogical approaches,and DBR.The review revealed significant trends in nursing education including empathy and resilience,cultural competence,technology,interprofessional education,as well as competency-based approaches.Major challenges included teacher shortages,limited clinical placements,technological adaptability,and student mental health issues.DBR became an approach to address these challenges and offers an iterative model for curriculum development and educational innovation.DBR is a systematic and collaborative way to improve nursing education.Despite the barriers to implementation,DBR can lead to a more applicable curriculum based on real-world healthcare needs and create a nimbler educational process to prepare nursing graduates for working in complex healthcare environments.展开更多

文摘There is a growing body of clinical research on the utility of synthetic data derivatives,an emerging research tool in medicine.In nephrology,clinicians can use machine learning and artificial intelligence as powerful aids in their clinical decision-making while also preserving patient privacy.This is especially important given the epidemiology of chronic kidney disease,renal oncology,and hypertension worldwide.However,there remains a need to create a framework for guidance regarding how to better utilize synthetic data as a practical application in this research.

文摘Think-aloud protocols have drawn much attention over the past two decades.Given the expanse of the relevant literature,we narrow our focus on core papers on the application of this research method to EFL education research in China in the past 25 years,aiming to summarize the achievements of its application to EFL education rescarch and discover the problems in the current rescarch.In this systematic review,a total of 53 articles are retrieved.Adopting the methodologial synthesis,we analyze the artidles from the perspectives of the research trend,research arcas,rescarch design,data collection,data analysis,and presentation of results.It is found that the overall number of studies using think-aloud in EFL education is insufficient.The research using think aloud in EFL writing accounts for the highest proportion,while few studies on EFL listening and speaking via this research method are conducted.Tertiary-level students are the most popular participants in the studies using think aloud protocols.In addition,the descriptions of the data collection and data analysis processes are insuficient.Based on these findings,implications for teachers,curriculum designers,and researchers in EFL education are further discussed.
文摘In the post-college era,university research organizations are facing unprecedented changes in their structure and operational models.In terms of organizational form,these institutions are transitioning from single-disciplinebased models to interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary collaboration models.This shift reflects the growing need to address complex,real-world problems that require expertise from multiple fields.From a management perspective,interdisciplinary research organizations face unique challenges.They must coordinate researchers from diverse disciplinary backgrounds,navigate potential conflicts between traditional departments and interdisciplinary units,and address differences in goals and organizational culture among members.These complexities make management more intricate and demanding.Simultaneously,the focus of university research organizations has become increasingly interest-driven,with research objectives,content,and participants reflecting specific areas of interest or societal demand.To adapt to these evolving trends,university research organizations must adopt flexible models tailored to their unique development needs.This approach will ensure the efficient execution of research activities and facilitate the effective transformation of research outcomes into practical applications.

文摘Objective:Based on the CNKI database,this study analyzes the current research status and hotspots of the Timing it Right(TIR)Theory in China,providing insights and references for its further development in the field of nursing.Methods:Using bibliometric methods and Citespace software,this study conducts a statistical and visual analysis of publications on TIR Theory from CNKI,focusing on annual publication volumes,author collaboration networks,high-frequency keywords,and emergent terms.Results:The study statistically analyzed the time distribution and research hotspots of 117 relevant papers.The annual publication volume shows a gradual upward trend,though the overall volume remains low.High-frequency keywords such as“family nursing,”“quality of life,”“acute myocardial infarction,”and“stroke”form the core research themes.Conclusion:Research on TIR Theory in China’s nursing field is still in the exploratory stage,and its attention and emphasis need to be enhanced.As it aligns with modern medical models,its application scope in nursing is expanding,promoting the high-quality,scientific,and diversified development of nursing services in China.

文摘Delirium is a transient and acute syndrome of encephalopathy,characterized by disturbances in consciousness,orientation,cognition,perception,and emotional regulation,often accompanied by hallucinations,illusions,psychomotor agitation,and restlessness.Postoperative delirium(POD),a common complication particularly in elderly patients,significantly impacts recovery by prolonging mechanical ventilation,neurosurgical intensive care unit stays,and overall hospitalization durations,while severely diminishing patients’quality of life after discharge.Despite its prevalence,POD remains underrecognized in clinical practice,with significant gaps in its diagnosis and management.This review explores the definition,diagnostic criteria,underlying pathogenesis,and associated risk factors of POD in neurosurgical patients,aiming to offer valuable insights for improving clinical diagnosis and therapeutic strategies.

文摘Purpose:Evaluating the quality of academic journal articles is a time consuming but critical task for national research evaluation exercises,appointments and promotion.It is therefore important to investigate whether Large Language Models(LLMs)can play a role in this process.Design/methodology/approach:This article assesses which ChatGPT inputs(full text without tables,figures,and references;title and abstract;title only)produce better quality score estimates,and the extent to which scores are affected by ChatGPT models and system prompts.Findings:The optimal input is the article title and abstract,with average ChatGPT scores based on these(30 iterations on a dataset of 51 papers)correlating at 0.67 with human scores,the highest ever reported.ChatGPT 4o is slightly better than 3.5-turbo(0.66),and 4o-mini(0.66).Research limitations:The data is a convenience sample of the work of a single author,it only includes one field,and the scores are self-evaluations.Practical implications:The results suggest that article full texts might confuse LLM research quality evaluations,even though complex system instructions for the task are more effective than simple ones.Thus,whilst abstracts contain insufficient information for a thorough assessment of rigour,they may contain strong pointers about originality and significance.Finally,linear regression can be used to convert the model scores into the human scale scores,which is 31%more accurate than guessing.Originality/value:This is the first systematic comparison of the impact of different prompts,parameters and inputs for ChatGPT research quality evaluations.

文摘Purpose:This study investigates whether publication-centric incentive systems,introduced through the National Scientific Accreditation(ASN:Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale)for professorships in Italy in 2012,contribute to adopting“salami publishing”strategies among Italian academics.Design/methodology/approach:A longitudinal bibliometric analysis was conducted on the publication records of over 25,000 Italian science professors to examine changes in publication output and the originality of their work following the implementation of the ASN.Findings:The analysis revealed a significant increase in publication output after the ASN’s introduction,along with a concurrent decline in the originality of publications.However,no evidence was found linking these trends to increased salami slicing practices among the observed researchers.Research limitations:Given the size of our observation field,we propose an innovative indirect approach based on the degree of originality of publications’bibliographies.We know that bibliographic coupling cannot capture salami publications per se,but only topically-related records.On the other hand,controlling for the author’s specialization level in the period,we believe that a higher level of bibliographic coupling in his scientific output can signal a change in his strategy of disseminating the results of his research.The relatively low R-squared values in our models(0.3-0.4)reflect the complexity of the phenomenon under investigation,revealing the presence of unmeasured factors influencing the outcomes,and future research should explore additional variables or alternative models that might account for a greater proportion of the variability.Despite this limitation,the significant predictors identified in our analysis provide valuable insights into the key factors driving the observed outcomes.Practical implications:The results of the study support those who argue that quantitative research assessment frameworks have had very positive effects and should not be dismissed,contrary to the claims of those evoking the occurrence of side effects that do not appear in the empirical analyses.Originality/value:This study provides empirical evidence on the impact of the ASN on publication behaviors in a huge micro-level dataset,contributing to the broader discourse on the effects of quantitative research assessments on academic publishing practices.
文摘As a response to the complexity of modern health care,nursing education is undergoing significant transformation.This paper aims to explore changing dynamics in nursing education,highlighting trends,challenges,and the potential of Design-Based Research(DBR)as a methodological approach for curricular enhancement.This study employed a qualitative synthesis methodology was utilised,employing a systematic literature analysis of peer-reviewed articles published from 2019 to 2023.Relevant studies were searched in primary databases such as PubMed,Scopus,and Google Scholar,using specific keywords pertaining to nursing education,innovative pedagogical approaches,and DBR.The review revealed significant trends in nursing education including empathy and resilience,cultural competence,technology,interprofessional education,as well as competency-based approaches.Major challenges included teacher shortages,limited clinical placements,technological adaptability,and student mental health issues.DBR became an approach to address these challenges and offers an iterative model for curriculum development and educational innovation.DBR is a systematic and collaborative way to improve nursing education.Despite the barriers to implementation,DBR can lead to a more applicable curriculum based on real-world healthcare needs and create a nimbler educational process to prepare nursing graduates for working in complex healthcare environments.
