Meanwhile, because of the uncertainties of magnitudes-distances pairs, there is large arbitrariness while determining the envelope function of time histories in seismic hazard analysis. In this paper, we describe a method to control the envelope functions of the time histories by introducing the most-likely combinations of magnitude and distance of the scenario earthquakes based on a probabilistic method, revise the software of the ellipse model for seismic hazard analysis, and give a computation example.展开更多

For the gap between three adjacent structures, the simulation is done by using linear spring element without damping. The entire numerical simulation is done in time domain by considering the inputs of four real ground motions. The results of the study show that the response of elastic system is much different to that of response of inelastic system in the absence and presence of pounding, especially in lighter or more flexible structures. Elastic structures show much severe pounding response than inelastic structures. Modeling of colliding structures behaving inelastically is really needed in order to obtain the accurate structural pounding involved response under seismic excitation.展开更多

The designation of pipeline system as “lifelines” signifies that their operation is essential in maintaining the public safety and well being. A pipeline transmission system is a linear system which traverses a large geographical area, and soil conditions thus, is susceptible to a wide variety of hazards. This pa-per is concerned with the dynamic behavior of buried town gas pipelines. A computer model with a finite number of nodes is created to simulate the behavior of the real gas pipeline. The dynamic susceptibility method is applied for twenty mode shapes of this model, which utilizes the stress per velocity method and is an incisive analytical tool for screening the vibration modes of the system. It can be readily identified, which modes, if excited, could potentially cause large dynamic stresses. This paper discusses also two of the piping dynamic analyses, namely the effect of the response spectrum of an earthquake and the time history analysis of a truck crosses the pipeline.展开更多

The Lagrangian approach was used with fluid elements to model impounded water. The interface elements were used to simulate the slippage between the concrete face slab and the rockfill. The horizontal component of the 1992 Erzincan earthquake, with a peak ground acceleration of 0.515g, was considered in time-history analysis. The Drucker-Prager model was preferred in nonlinear analysis of the concrete slab, rockfill and foundation soil. The maximum principal stresses and the maximum displacements in two opposite directions were compared by the height of the concrete slab according to linear time-history analysis to reveal the effect of reservoir water. The changes of critical displacements and principal stresses with time are also shown in this paper. According to linear and nonlinear time-history analysis, the effect of the reservoir water on the earthquake performance of the Torul CFR Dam was investigated and the possible damage situation was examined. The results show that the hydrodynamic pressure of reservoir water leads to an increase in the maximum displacements and principal stresses of the dam and reduces the earthquake performance of the dam. Although the linear time-history analysis demonstrates that the earthquake causes a momentous damage to the concrete slab of the Torul CFR Dam, the nonlinear time-history analysis shows that no evident damage occurs in either reservoir case.展开更多
