This study aims to elucidate the dynamic evolution mechanism of the fracturing fracture system during the exploration and development of complex oil and gas reservoirs.By integrating methods of rock mechanical testing, logging calculation, and seismic inversion technology,we obtained the current insitu stress characteristics of a single well and rock mechanical parameters.Simultaneously, significant controlling factors of rock mechanical properties were analyzed.Subsequently,by coupling hydraulic fracturing physical experiments with finite element numerical simulation, three different fracturing models were configured:single-cluster,double-cluster,and triple-cluster perforations.Combined with acoustic emission technology, the fracture initiation mode and evolution characteristics during the loading process were determined. The results indicate the following findings:(1)The extension direction and length of the fracture are significantly controlled by the direction of the maximum horizontal principal stress.(2)Areas with poor cementation and compactness exhibit complex fracture morphology, prone to generating network fractures.(3)The interlayer development of fracturing fractures is controlled by the strata occurrence.(4)Increasing the displacement of fracturing fluid enlarges the fracturing fracture length and height. This research provides theoretical support and effective guidance for hydraulic fracturing design in tight oil and gas reservoirs. 展开更多

Based on the displacement discontinuity method and the discrete fracture unified pipe network model,a sequential iterative numerical method was used to build a fracturing-production integrated numerical model of shale gas well considering the two-phase flow of gas and water. The model accounts for the influence of natural fractures and matrix properties on the fracturing process and directly applies post-fracturing formation pressure and water saturation distribution to subsequent well shut-in and production simulation, allowing for a more accurate fracturing-production integrated simulation. The results show that the reservoir physical properties have great impacts on fracture propagation, and the reasonable prediction of formation pressure and reservoir fluid distribution after the fracturing is critical to accurately predict the gas and fluid production of the shale gas wells.Compared with the conventional method, the proposed model can more accurately simulate the water and gas production by considering the impact of fracturing on both matrix pressure and water saturation. The established model is applied to the integrated fracturing-production simulation of practical horizontal shale gas wells. The simulation results are in good agreement with the practical production data, thus verifying the accuracy of the model. 展开更多

Gas extraction practice has been proven for the clear majority of coal mines in China to be unfavorable using drill holes in the coal seam. Rather, mining-induced fractures in the goaf should be utilized for gas extraction. To study gas migration in mining-induced fractures, one mining face of 10 th Mine in Pingdingshan Coalmine Group in Henan, China, has been selected as the case study for this work. By establishing the mathematical model of gas migration under the influence of coal seam mining, discrete element software UDEC and Multiphysics software COMSOL are employed to model gas migration in mining-induced fractures above the goaf. The results show that as the working face advances, the goaf overburden gradually forms a mining-induced fracture network in the shape of a trapezoid, the size of which increases with the distance of coal face advance. Compared with gas migration in the overburden matrix, the gas flow in the fracture network due to mining is far greater. The largest mining-induced fracture is located at the upper end of the trapezoidal zone, which results in the largest gas flux in the network. When drilling for gas extraction in a mining-induced fracture field, the gas concentration is reduced in the whole region during the process of gas drainage, and the rate of gas concentration drops faster in the fractured zone. It is shown that with gas drainage, the gas flow velocity in the mininginduced fracture network is faster. 展开更多

In order to improve our understanding of rock fracture and fault instability driven by high-pressure fluid sources, the authors carried out rock fracture tests using granite under a confining pressure of 80 MPa with fluid injection in the laboratory. Furthermore, we tested a number of numerical models using the FLAC;modeling software to find the best model to represent the experimental results. The high-speed multichannel acoustic emission(AE) waveform recording system used in this study made it possible to examine the total fracture process through detailed monitoring of AE hypocenters and seismic velocity. The experimental results show that injecting high-pressure oil into the rock sample can induce AE activity at very low stress levels and can dramatically reduce the strength of the rock. The results of the numerical simulations show that major experimental results, including the strength, the temporal and spatial patterns of the AE events, and the role of the fluid can be represented fairly well by a model involving(1) randomly distributed defect elements to model pre-existing cracks,(2) random modification of rock properties to represent inhomogeneity introduced by different mineral grains, and(3)macroscopic inhomogeneity. Our study, which incorporates laboratory experiments and numerical simulations, indicates that such an approach is helpful in finding a better model not only for simulating experimental results but also for upscaling purposes. 展开更多

Frac-packing technology has been introduced to improve the development effect of weakly consolidated sandstone. It has double effects on increasing production and sand control. However, determining operation parameters of frac-packing is the key factor due to the particularity of weakly consolidated sandstone. In order to study the mechanisms of hydraulic fracture propagation and reveal the effect of fracturing parameters on fracture morphology in weakly consolidated sandstone, finite element numerical model of fluid-solid coupling is established to carry out numerical simulation to analyze influences of mechanical characteristics, formation permeability, fracturing fluid injection rate and viscosity on fracture propagation. The result shows that lower elastic modulus is favorable for inducing short and wide fractures and controls the fracture length while Poisson ratio has almost no effect.Large injection rate and high viscosity of fracturing fluid are advantageous to fracture initiation and propagation.Suitable fractures are produced when the injection rate is approximate to3–4m3/min and fluid viscosity is over100mPa?s.The leak-off of fracturing fluid to formation is rising with the increase of formation permeability, which is adverse to fracture propagation. The work provides theoretical reference to determine the construction parameters for the frac-packing design in weakly consolidated reservoirs. 展开更多

In this study, the spatial distributions of stress and fracture fields for three typical underground coal mining layouts, Le, non-pillar mining (NM), top-coal caving mining (TCM) and protective coal-seam mining (PCM), are modeled using discrete element software UDEC, The numerical results show that different mining layouts can lead to different mining-induced stress fields, resulting in diverse fracture fields, For the PCM, the mining influenced area in front of the mining faces is the largest, and the stress concentration factor in front of the mining faces is the lowest, The spatial shapes of the mining-induced fracture fields under NM, TCM and PCM differ, and they are characterized by trapezoidal, triangular and tower shapes, respectively, The fractal dimensions of mining-induced fractures of the three mining layouts decrease in the order of PCM, TCM and NM, It is also shown that the PCM can result in a better gas control effect in coal mines with high outburst potential, The numerical results are expected to provide a basis for understanding of mining-induced gas seepage fields and provide a reference for high- efficiency coal mining, 展开更多

Fracture prediction is a technical issue in the field of petroleum exploration and production worldwide.Although there are many approaches to predict the distribution of cracks underground, these approaches have some limitations. To resolve these issues,we ascertained the relation between numerical simulations of tectonic stress and the predicted distribution of fractures from the perspective of geologic genesis, based on the characteristics of the shale reservoir in the Longmaxi Formation in Dingshan;the features of fracture development in this reservoir were considered.3 D finite element method(FEM)was applied in combination with rock mechanical parameters derived from the acoustic emissions. The paleotectonic stress field of the crack formation period was simulated for the Longmaxi Formation in the Dingshan area. The splitting factor in the study area was calculated based on the rock breaking criterion. The coefficient of fracture development was selected as the quantitative prediction classification criteria for the cracks. The results show that a higher coefficient of fracture development indicates a greater degree of fracture development. On the basis of the fracture development coefficient classification,a favorable area was identified for the development of fracture prediction in the study area. The prediction results indicate that the south of the Dingshan area and the DY3 well of the central region are favorable zones for fracture development. 展开更多

It has signifcant efects on improving the shear strength of jointed rock mass and controlling the stability of surrounding rock. To achieve an accurate simulation of bolted joint shear tests, we have studied a numerical simulation method that takes into account the 2G-NPR bolt's tensile–shear fracture criterion. Firstly, the indoor experimental study on the tensile–shear mechanical properties of 2G-NPR bolt is carried out to explore its mechanical properties under diferent tensile–shear angles, and the fracture criterion of 2G-NPR bolt considering the tensile–shear angle is established. Then, a three-dimensional numerical simulation method considering the tensile–shear mechanical constitutive and fracture criterion of 2G-NPR bolt, the elastoplastic mechanical behavior of surrounding rock and the damage and deterioration of grouting body is proposed. The feasibility and accuracy of the method are verifed by comparing with the indoor shear test results of 2G-NPR bolt anchorage joints. Finally, based on the numerical simulation results, the deformation and stress of the bolt, the distribution of the plastic zone of the rock mass, the stress distribution and the damage of the grouting body are analyzed in detail. The research results can provide a good reference value for the practical engineering application and shear mechanical performance analysis of 2G-NPR bolt. 展开更多

This study clarifies the seepage characteristics of complex fractured pressure-sensitive reservoirs, and addresses a common technological problem, that is the alteration of the permeability degree of the reservoir bed(known to be responsible for changes in the direction and velocity of fluid flows between wells). On the basis of a new pressuresensitive equation that considers the fracture directional pressure-sensitive effect,an oil-gas-water three-phase seepage mathematical model is introduced, which can be applied to pressure-sensitive,full-tensor permeability,ultralow-permeability reservoirs with fracture-induced anisotropy.Accordingly, numerical simulations are conducted to explore the seepage laws for ultralow-permeability reservoirs. The results show that element patterns have the highest recovery percentage under a fracture angle of 45°.Accounting for the pressure-sensitive effect produces a decrease in the recovery percentage.Several patterns are considered:inverted five-seven-and nine-spot patterns and a cross-row well pattern. Finally, two strategies are introduced to counteract the rotation of the direction of the principal permeability due to the fracture directional pressure-sensitive effect. 展开更多

A mathematical model, fully coupling multiple porous media deformation and fluid flow, was established based on the elastic theory of porous media and fluid-solid coupling mechanism in tight oil reservoirs. The finite element method was used to determine the numerical solution and the accuracy of the model was verified. On this basis, the model was used to simulate productivity of multistage fractured horizontal wells in tight oil reservoirs. The results show that during the production of tight oil wells, the reservoir region close to artificial fractures deteriorated in physical properties significantly, e.g. the aperture and conductivity of artificial fractures dropped by 52.12% and 89.02% respectively. The simulations of 3000-day production of a horizontal well in tight oil reservoir showed that the predicted productivity by the uncoupled model had an error of 38.30% from that by the fully-coupled model. Apparently, ignoring the influence of fluid-solid interaction effect led to serious deviations of the productivity prediction results. The productivity of horizontal well in tight oil reservoir was most sensitive to the start-up pressure gradient, and second most sensitive to the opening of artificial fractures. Enhancing the initial conductivity of artificial fractures was helpful to improve the productivity of tight oil wells. The influence of conductivity, spacing, number and length of artificial fractures should be considered comprehensively in fracturing design. Increasing the number of artificial fractures unilaterally could not achieve the expected increase in production. 展开更多

The 3D numerical simulation model of deep hard-rock deposit in Kaiyang Phosphate Mine of Guiyang was established based on the practical engineering using 3DEC numerical simulation software. The distribution characteristics of displacement fields and plastic zones of the orebody were simulated in three different excavation cases, including the case of excavation artificial inducted roadway in the orebody, the case of horizontal or vertical excavation direction and the case of the upward or downward excavation order. The simulation results indicate that the plastic zone and displacement field of surrounding rock around the inducted roadway are continuously increasing with the increase of the exposure time after digging an artificial inducted roadway in the orebody. Thus the raw rock ore becomes easier to be fragmented, which provides advantageous conditions for roadheader to cut high stress hard-rock. It is worthy noting that there is a large difference in effective utilization of deep ground pressure between horizontal and vertical excavation directions. The later can produce larger deformation and fracture zone than the former on the rock mass around the deduced roadway, which means that the later may utilize the high ground pressure more effectively to break hard-rock. And the obtained results also show that upward excavation order is more helpful for ground pressure to break rock than downward excavation order. 展开更多

The continuum approach in fluid flow modeling is generally applied to porous geological media, but has limited applicability to fractured rocks. With the presence of a discrete fracture network relatively sparsely distributed in the matrix, it may be difficult or erroneous to use a porous medium fluid flow model with continuum assumptions to describe the fluid flow in fractured rocks at small or even large field scales. A discrete fracture fluid flow approach incorporating a stochastic fracture network with numerical fluid flow simulations could have the capability of capturing fluid flow behaviors such as inhomogeneity and anisotropy while reflecting the changes of hydraulic features at different scales. Moreover, this approach can be implemented to estimate the size of the representative elementary volume (REV) in order to find out the scales at which a porous medium flow model could be applied, and then to determine the hydraulic conductivity tensor for fractured rocks. The following topics are focused on in this study: (a) conceptual discrete fracture fluid flow modeling incorporating a stochastic fracture network with numerical flow simulations; (b) estimation of REV and hydraulic conductivity tensor for fractured rocks utilizing a stochastic fracture network with numerical fluid flow simulations; (c) investigation of the effect of fracture orientation and density on the hydraulic conductivity and REV by implementing a stochastic fracture network with numerical fluid flow simulations, and (d) fluid flow conceptual models accounting for major and minor fractures in the 2 D or 3 D flow fields incorporating a stochastic fracture network with numerical fluid flow simulations. 展开更多

Deep shale reservoirs are characterized by elevated breakdown pressures, diminished fracture complexity, and reduced modified volumes compared to medium and shallow reservoirs. Therefore,it is urgent to investigate particular injection strategies that can optimize breakdown pressure and fracturing efficiency to address the increasing demands for deep shale reservoir stimulation. In this study, the efficiency of various stimulation strategies, including multi-cluster simultaneous fracturing, modified alternating fracturing, alternating shut-in fracturing, and cyclic alternating fracturing, was evaluated.Subsequently, the sensitivity of factors such as the cycle index,shut-in time, cluster spacing, and horizontal permeability was investigated.Additionally, the flow distribution effect within the wellbore was discussed. The results indicate that relative to multi-cluster simultaneous fracturing, modified alternating fracturing exhibits reduced susceptibility to the stress shadow effect, which results in earlier breakdown, extended hydraulic fracture lengths, and more consistent propagation despite an increase in breakdown pressure. The alternating shut-in fracturing benefits the increase of fracture length, which is closely related to the shut-in time.Furthermore, cyclic alternating fracturing markedly lowers breakdown pressure and contributes to uniform fracture propagation,in which the cycle count plays an important role.Modified alternating fracturing demonstrates insensitivity to variations in cluster spacing, whereas horizontal permeability is a critical factor affecting fracture length. The wellbore effect restrains the accumulation of pressure and flow near the perforation, delaying the initiation of hydraulic fractures. The simulation results can provide valuable numerical insights for optimizing injection strategies for deep shale hydraulic fracturing. 展开更多

Accurate descriptions of matrix diffusion across the fracture/matrix interface are critical to assessing contaminant migration in fractured media. The classical transfer probability method is only applicable for relatively large diffusion coefficients and small fracture spacings, due to an intrinsic assumption of an equilibrium concentration profile in the matrix blocks. Motivated and required by practical applications, we propose a direct numerical simulation (DNS) approach without any empirical assumptions. A three-step Lagrangian algorithm was developed and validated to directly track the particle dynamics across the fracture/matrix interface, where particle's diffusive displacement across the discontinuity is controlled by an analytical, one-side reflection probability. Numerical experiments show that the DNS approach is especially efficient for small diffusion coefficients and large fracture spacings, alleviating limitations of the classical modeling approach. 展开更多

For circumstances of medium-embedding depth and medium-hard surroundings in Jining No.2 Colliery, Yanzhou Group, by using software RFPA2D to simulate the process of overburden fracture, studied the overburden separation which was caused by working face exploitation, its fracture characteristics and the isolated island coalface(IIC) formation systematically in comparison method. After the recovery of the IIC, the surrounding separation areas which lied above the working face and bilateral goaved respectively form a connected region, a region that is like a saddle with low middle (35 times) and high sides. The top boundary line of the separation area is an arc. Then the fracture rise rapidly to 28 times of working thickness; while it is smaller (only 8-17 times recovery height) when extracting bilaterally, though the fracture plane both are in shape of an unsymmetrical trapezium. As the recovery of IIC makes side recoveries change from insufficiency to sufficiency, the consequentially rapid change of characteristics of overburden separation and fracture would enhance the representation degree of mining pressure of IIC. 展开更多

Continental shale oil reservoirs, characterized by numerous bedding planes and micro-nano scale pores, feature significantly higher stress sensitivity compared to other types of reservoirs. However, research on suitable stress sensitivity characterization models is still limited. In this study, three commonly used stress sensitivity models for shale oil reservoirs were considered, and experiments on representative core samples were conducted.By fitting and comparing the data, the“exponential model”was identified as a characterization model that accurately represents stress sensitivity in continental shale oil reservoirs. To validate the accuracy of the model,a two-phase seepage mathematical model for shale oil reservoirs coupled with the exponential model was introduced. The model was discretely solved using the finite volume method, and its accuracy was verified through the commercial simulator CMG.The study evaluated the productivity of a typical horizontal well under different engineering, geological, and fracture conditions. The results indicate that considering stress sensitivity leads to a 13.57%reduction in production for the same matrix permeability.Additionally,as the fracture half-length and the number of fractures increase, and the bottomhole flowing pressure decreases, the reservoir stress sensitivity becomes higher. 展开更多

In response to the complex characteristics of actual low-permeability tight reservoirs, this study develops a meshless-based numerical simulation method for oil-water two-phase flow in these reservoirs, considering complex boundary shapes.Utilizing radial basis function point interpolation, the method approximates shape functions for unknown functions within the nodal influence domain. The shape functions constructed by the aforementioned meshless interpolation method haveδ-function properties, which facilitate the handling of essential aspects like the controlled bottom-hole flow pressure in horizontal wells. Moreover, the meshless method offers greater flexibility and freedom compared to grid cell discretization, making it simpler to discretize complex geometries.A variational principle for the flow control equation group is introduced using a weighted least squares meshless method, and the pressure distribution is solved implicitly.Example results demonstrate that the computational outcomes of the meshless point cloud model, which has a relatively small degree of freedom, are in close agreement with those of the Discrete Fracture Model(DFM)employing refined grid partitioning, with pressure calculation accuracy exceeding 98.2%.Compared to high-resolution grid-based computational methods, the meshless method can achieve a better balance between computational efficiency and accuracy.Additionally, the impact of fracture half-length on the productivity of horizontal wells is discussed. The results indicate that increasing the fracture half-length is an effective strategy for enhancing production from the perspective of cumulative oil production. 展开更多

For the case of a fractured reservoir surrounded by deformable rocks, the appropriateness and applicability of the two common methods of coupling of flow and deformation, explicit (coupled) and implicit (uncoupled) methods are investigated. The explicit formulation is capable of modelling surrounding media;while the implicit coupling is unable to do so as deformation vector does not appear as a primary variable in the formulation. The governing differential equations and the finite element approximation of the governing equations for each of the methods are presented. Spatial discretization is achieved using the Galerkin method, and temporal discretisation using the finite difference technique. In the explicit model, coupling between flow and deformation is captured through volumetric strain compatibility amongst the phases within the system. In the implicit model, this is achieved by defining the pore space storativity as a function of the formation compressibility and the compressibility of the fluid phases within the pore space. The impact of rock deformability on early, intermediate and late time responses of fractured reservoir is investigated through several numerical examples. Salient features of each formulation are discussed and highlighted. It is shown that the implicit model is unable to capture the constraining effects of a non-yielding, surrounding rock, leading to incorrect projections of reservoir production irrespective of the history matching strategy adopted. 展开更多
