Low-velocity impact damage known as“imperceptible”damage usually destroys the structural integrity of the material and seriously affects the service life of the materials.To improve the low-velocity impact resistanc...Low-velocity impact damage known as“imperceptible”damage usually destroys the structural integrity of the material and seriously affects the service life of the materials.To improve the low-velocity impact resistance of foam sandwich composites,an innovative concept of a stitched multi-layer sandwich structure by organically combining the discrete splitting of foam layer with full thickness stitching was proposed,and its low-velocity impact resistance obtained through drop-hammer impact tests was explored.The results showed that the multi-layer foam sandwich structure acted as a stress disperser and reduced the irreversible impact damage.The depth and area of low-velocity impact damage of multi-layer foam sandwich composites gradually decreased with increasing the number of the layers.The stitched structure would improve the integrity of the foam sandwich composites and inhibit the propagation of cracks.The maximum impact load of the stitched foam sandwich composite increased by approximately 5% compared with that of the non-stitched material.In addition,the low-velocity impact damage depth,damage area and absorbed energy of the stitched three-layer foam sandwich composite were reduced by 37.7%,34.6% and 20.7%,respectively,compared with those of the non-stitched single-layer sandwich material.展开更多

The experimental results show that the new composite structure has an improved comprehensive performance compared with the traditional aluminum foam sandwiches. The optimized parameters for the fabrication of the new aluminum foam composite structure with best bending strength were obtained. The epoxy resin and low porosity aluminum foams are preferred, the thickness of aluminum sheets should be at least 1.5 mm, and the type of glass fiber has little effect on the bending strength. During the Co-Cure Molding(CCM)of airfoil foam sandwich structure,it is challenging to avoid collapse of foam core at the trailing edge.Herein,an Equal Proportional Thickening(EPT)method is proposed to optimize the in...During the Co-Cure Molding(CCM)of airfoil foam sandwich structure,it is challenging to avoid collapse of foam core at the trailing edge.Herein,an Equal Proportional Thickening(EPT)method is proposed to optimize the interference of polymethacrylimide(PMI)foam core during the CCM process.Firstly,based on some basic parameters of composite skin and foam core obtained by experiments or multi-scale simulations,a thermal-curing-mechanical coupling analysis for the CCM of foam sandwich structure is performed and the results show that the maximum stress within foam core occurs at the completion of mold-closing,which tends to decrease during the subsequent CCM process.Then,the foam core is thickened by traditional equidistant-thickening method,and the simulation reveals that the foam core at the trailing edge tends to collapse because of stress concentration.Conversely,if the foam core is thickened by the proposed EPT method,the mold-closing caused collapse at the trailing edge can be effectively avoided,and a thickening ratio range of 0.6%–2.0%is obtained,which is further proved by practical verifications.Therefore,the interference design scheme proposed can ensure the molding quality and effectively reduce the scrap of molded products.展开更多

Based on published papers, the dimensionless values of limit loads for different failure modes were modified according to real test condition. The load-deformation relation from the analytical formulae was compared with that from experimental and numerical results. A mechanism map was provided to reveal the dependence of the dominant collapse mechanism upon the geometry parameters of the face and the core. The results show that the prediction accuracy was high only if the face thickness was much smaller than the core thickness.展开更多
