We consider various modulation waveforms and find that square-wave modulation has the highest excitation efficiency for ELF/VLF signals, and that square-wave modulation with a smaller duty cycle(<50%) exhibits higher excitation efficiency for ELF/VLF signals, while the sin^(2)t waveform modulation yields the lowest proportion of harmonic energy in the generated signals. The amplitude of the second harmonic generated by the sin^(2)t waveform is less than one-tenth that of the fundamental frequency, and the energy of higher-frequency harmonics can be negligibly small compared with those of the fundamental wave. It is a challenging task to achieve a balance between enhancing the excitation efficiency of ELF/VLF signals and also suppressing harmonics generated by the modulated heating process. This is because the harmonics are correspondingly enhanced as the excitation efficiency of the signals is increased. However, we find that under conditions of varying effective radiant power and modulation frequency, as long as the modulation waveform is unchanged, the energy ratio between the fundamental frequency signal generated by modulated heating and each harmonic is relatively fixed, with changes only in signal intensity and the location of the radiation source zone. This implies that one can first select modulation waveforms that make the signal less prone to distortion, then increase the effective radiated power to enhance the signal strength, without concern for harmonic interference of the fundamental signal.展开更多

The Drude model is improved to describe the dielectric property of dusty plasmas, which accounts for collisions including electron–molecule, electron–ion, and electron–dust particles. Based on the improved Drude model, the propagation characteristics of microwaves in dusty plasmas have been numerically calculated and studied. The results show that the propagation characteristics of microwaves through dusty plasmas are different from those through normal plasmas. The effects of dust density and size are mainly studied. Numerical results indicate that the momentum transfer between electrons and dust grains makes more energy loss. The dust density and dust size have a similar influence on EM wave propagation, resulting in less transmission and more absorption.展开更多

The observation of the ultra high frequency radar illustrates the systematic variations of the enhanced ion line and plasma line in altitude and intensity as a function of the pump frequency. The analysis shows that those altitude variations are due to the thermal effect, and the intensity variations of the enhanced ion line are dependent on whether or not the enhanced ion acoustic wave satisfy the Bragg condition of radar. Moreover, a prediction that if the enhancement in electron temperature is suppressed, those systematic variations will be absent, is given.展开更多

The enhancement extended over a wide range of altitudes, above the reflection altitude of the high-frequency pump wave. However, whether this enhancement actually corresponds to a true enhancement in electron density remains an open question. When the dispersion relation of ion acoustic waves is followed, the frequency ratio of the enhanced ion line to the background ion line suggests that the profile of the effective ion mass may have remained unchanged. Furthermore, the solar radio flux and ion drift velocity indicate no significant changes in the ion species and their densities. In conclusion, the electron density enhancement observed at EISCAT should not, in fact, be considered a true enhancement.展开更多

A ...A sixteen moment approximation based on a bi-Maxwellian that contains the stress tensor and the heat flow vector is applied to describe the ion velocity distribution which influences the incoherent scatter spectra. A discussion is made about the effects on the incoherent scatter spectra caused by different values of the normalized perpendicular drift velocity D, aspect angle Φ between the magnetic field and the line-of-sight direction, and the ratio α of the ion-neutral collision to ion cyclotron frequency. Numerical results show that the shifting and asymmetry of incoherent scatter spectra appear parallel to E × B and E as the normalized perpendicular drift velocity D increases due to the ion drift velocity, the stress tensor and the heat flow vector respectively. However, the spectrum is always typically double-humped Maxwellian parallel to B. The ion velocity distribution is more distorted from the Maxwellian as the aspect angle Φ increases from 0° to 90°, and consequently the incoherent scatter spectra is no longer typically double-humped Maxwellian. Asαincreases, the ion velocity distribution becomes Maxwellian and the incoherent scatter spectra become typically double-humped Maxwellian even with a large value of the normalized perpendicular drift velocity D. It is reasonable to use the sixteen-moment approximation to describe the non-Maxwellian plasma characterized by the large temperature anisotropy.展开更多

The observations show that the apparent enhancement in electron density extending over a wide altitude range and the enhancement in electron temperature around the reflection altitude occur as a function of pump frequency. Additionally, the plasma line spectra show unusual behavior as a function of pump frequency. In conclusion, the upper hybrid wave resonance excited by the pump wave plays a dominating role and leads to the enhancement in electron temperature at the upper hybrid altitude. The phenomenon of apparent enhancement in electron density does not correspond to the true enhancement in electron density, this may be due to some mechanism that preferentially involves the plasma transport process and leads to the strong backscatter of radar wave along the magnetic line, which remains to be determined.展开更多

The aspect sensitivity of PMSE using this radar and at such a high frequency has not been previously reported. Data concerning the aspect sensitivity of PMSE were collected by traversing the antenna beam from the zenith direction, and comparing the received power. Surprisingly, as the intensity received by the oblique beam was often larger than that of the vertical beam, suggesting the presence of tilted dusty plasma layers as a potential cause, a theoretical model was developed to confirm the existence of these layers and their formation process. The experimental results and theoretical model presented help elucidate the structural properties of the possible generation mechanism of strong radar echoes in the polar summer mesosphere region.展开更多

The analysis shows that the systematic variation in the altitude of the pump enhanced ion line is principally dependent on the enhanced electron temperature, although the changes in the profile of the electron density brought about by the ionospheric heating are not independent of those systematic altitude variations.展开更多

The phenomenon of apparent enhancement in electron density does not correspond to the true enhancement in electron density, this may be due to some mechanism that preferentially involves the plasma transport process and leads to the strong backscatter of radar wave along the magnetic line, which remains to be determined.

文摘The European Incoherent Scatter Scientific Association(EISCAT) Very High Frequency(224 MHz) Radar has been used to investigate the aspect sensitivity of polar mesosphere summer echoes(PMSE) in the period 13–15 July 2010. The experimental results and theoretical model presented help elucidate the structural properties of the possible generation mechanism of strong radar echoes in the polar summer mesosphere region.

文摘The electron kinetic model for investigating the transport and ionization rate coefficients of argon glow discharge dusty plasma is developed from the Boltzmann equation. Both of the electron-neutral and electron-dust collisions are considered as collision terms in the kinetic equation. The kinetic equation is simplified by employing the local approximation and nonlocal approach under the same discharge conditions, and the corresponding simplified kinetic equations are known as local and nonlocal kinetic equations respectively. Then the electron energy distribution function(EEDF)is obtained by numerically solving the local and nonlocal kinetic equations and the dust charging equations simultaneously.Based on the obtained EEDFs,the effective electron temperature, electron mobility, electron diffusion coefficient and ionization rate coefficient are calculated for different discharge conditions. It is shown that the EEDFs calculated from the local kinetic model clearly differ from the nonlocal EEDFs and both the local and nonlocal EEDFs are also clearly different with Maxwellian distributions. The appearance of dust particles results in an obvious decrease of high energy electrons and increase of low energy electrons when axial electric field is low. With the increase of axial electric field, the influence of dust particles on the EEDFs becomes smaller. The electron mobility and diffusion coefficients calculated on the basis of local and nonlocal EEDFs do not differ greatly to the dust-free ones. While, when dust density nd=10^6 cm^?3,the electron mobility increases obviously compared with the dust-free results at low axial electric field and decreases with the increasing axial electric field until they are close to the dust-free ones.Meanwhile, electron diffusion coefficients for dusty case become smaller and decrease with the increasing axial electric field. The ionization rate coefficients decrease when dust particles are introduced and they approach the dust-free results gradually with the increasing axial electric field.

文摘The transmission of terahertz(THz)Bessel vortex beams through a multi-layered anisotropic magnetized plasma slab is investigated by using a hybrid method of cylindrical vector wave functions(CVWFs)and Fourier transform. On the basis of the electromagnetic boundary conditions on each interface,a cascade form of expansion coefficients of the reflected and transmitted fields is obtained.Taking a double Gaussian distribution of the plasma density as an example, the influences of the applied magnetic field, the incident angle and polarization mode of the incident beams on the magnitude,OAM mode and polarization of the transmitted beams are analyzed in detail. The results indicate that the applied magnetic field has a major effect upon the polarization state of the transmitted fields but not upon the transmitted OAM spectrum. The incident angle has a powerful influence upon both the amplitude profile and the OAM spectrum of the transmitted beam.Furthermore, for multiple coaxial vortex beams,an increase of the maximum value of the plasma density causes more remarkable distortion of both the profile and OAM spectrum of the transmitted beam. This research makes a stable foundation for the THz OAM multiplexing/demultiplexing technology in a magnetized plasma environment.

文摘A self-consistent fluid model is developed to investigate the radial distributions of dusty plasma parameters in a DC glow discharge,in which the extended fluid approach of plasma particles and the transport equations of dust particles are coupled. The electrical interaction between charged dust particles is considered in the model. The time evolution of radial distributions of dust density, plasma density, the radial component of electric field and the forces acting on dust particles when dust density tends to be stable, are obtained and analyzed under different discharge currents and dust particle radii. It is shown that the dust density structure is determined mainly by the radial electrostatic force, thermophoretic force and ion drag force in the discharge tube, and both discharge current and dust particle radius have an obvious effect on the transport processes of dust particles. The dust particles gather in the central region of the discharge tube for low discharge current and small dust radius, then dust voids are formed and become wider when the discharge current and dust radius increase. The plasma parameters in the dust gathering region are obviously affected by the dust particles due to the charging processes of electrons and ions to the dust surface.

文摘The observation of ultra high frequency radar during an ionospheric experiment carrying out at the European Incoherent Scatter Scientific Association, demonstrates a systematic variation in the altitude of the pump enhanced ion line, which is quite remarkably dependent on the pump frequency, that is, when the pump frequency sweeps above the fifth gyroharrnonic, the altitude of the enhanced ion line is ~3 to ~6 kin lower than that at the pump frequency very close to the fifth gyroharmonic. The analysis shows that the systematic variation in the altitude of the pump enhanced ion line is principally dependent on the enhanced electron temperature, although the changes in the profile of the electron density brought about by the ionospheric heating are not independent of those systematic altitude variations.
文摘Analysis of Incoherent Scatter Radar(ISR)data collected during an experiment involving alternating O/X mode pumping reveals that the high-frequency enhanced ion line(HFIL)and plasma line(HFPL)did not appear immediately after the onset of pumping, but were delayed by a few seconds.By examining the initial behaviors of the ion line, plasma line, and electron temperature,as well as ionosphere conditions,we find that(1)the HFIL and HFPL were delayed not only in the X mode pumping but also in the O mode pumping and(2)the HFIL was not observed prior to enhancement of the electron temperature. Our analysis suggests that(1)leakage of the X mode to the O mode pumping may not be ignored and(2)spatiotemporal uncertainties and spatiotemporal variations in the profiles of ion mass and electron density may have played important roles in the apparent failure of the Bragg condition to apply;(3)nevertheless,the absence of parametric decay instability(PDI)cannot be ruled out,due to our inability to match conditions caused by the spatiotemporal uncertainties.

文摘The plasma wake of reentry vehicles has the advantages of extensive space range and long traceability, which provides new possibilities for the detection and monitoring of reentry vehicles.Based on the Zakharov model, this work investigates the excitation and power spectrum characteristics of electromagnetic radiation for the plasma wake of a typical reentry vehicle. With the aid of parametric decay instability, the excitation condition of electromagnetic radiation for a typical plasma wake is evaluated first. The power spectrum characteristics of electromagnetic radiation, including the effects of both the flight parameters and incident wave parameters are analyzed in detail. The results show that when the phenomenon of excited electromagnetic radiation occurs, plasma wakes closer to the bottom of the vehicle and with faster speeds require higher incident frequencies and thresholds of the electric field. As the frequency of the incident wave increases, peaks appear in the power spectra of plasma wakes, and their magnitudes increase gradually. The frequency shifts of the secondary peaks are equal, whereas, the peaks of the downshifted spectral lines are generally larger than those of the upshifted spectral lines. The work in this paper provides a new idea and method for the tracking of reentry vehicles, which has potential application value in the field of reentry vehicle detection.

文摘The electromagnetic pulse excited by the collision between a hypervelocity meteoroid and a spacecraft is studied both numerically and theoretically. It is found that there are two kinds of electromagnetic pulse. The high-frequency electromagnetic pulse may be excited by the sum of all the electric dipoles. Each electron can be considered as an electric dipole. The low-frequency electromagnetic pulse is produced by the Langmuir oscillation of electrons. The energy flux density and the duration time of the excited low-frequency electromagnetic pulse by the meteoroid are also studied in the present paper. It is shown that the energy flux density increases as either the impact speed or the mass of the meteoroid increases. It is also shown that the duration time decreases as both the impact speed and the mass of the meteoroid increase.By measuring the strength and the duration time of the electromagnetic pulse excited by the collision between the hypervelocity meteoroid and spacecraft,we can estimate the speed and the mass of the hypervelocity meteoroid, which will be helpful in space flight and space exploration.

文摘In order to solve the thickness dependence of plasma absorption of electromagnetic waves and further reduce the backward radar scattering cross section(RCS)of the target,we designed a novel composite structure of a metasurface and plasma.A metasurface with three absorption peaks is designed by means of an equivalent circuit based on an electromagnetic resonance type metamaterial absorber. The reflection and absorption of the composite structure are numerically and experimentally verified. The finite integration method was used to simulate a composite structure of finite size to obtain the RCS.The experimental measurements of electromagnetic wave reflection were conducted by a vector network analyzer(Keysight N5234A)and horn antennas, etc. The research showed that the absorption capacity of this composite structure was substantially improved compared to either the plasma or the metasurface, and it is more convenient for application due to its low plasma thickness requirement and easy fabrication.

文摘This paper deals with the dielectric permittivity of dusty plasma in the earth’s mesosphere. We give expressions for the complex dielectric permittivity of dusty plasma, taking into account the effects of the dust charging process and magnetic field. We discuss the dielectric permittivity of dusty plasma in several cases, such as high frequency approximation, parallel propagation in MF/HF band, and effects of plasma movement. Finally, the expressions are employed to study the phenomenon of radar echoes from the polar summer mesosphere. We report that dielectric permittivity caused by the dust charging process gives a radar cross section proportional to ω–4 and produces a number density of charged dust that agrees with measurements of mesopheric radar echoes.
