The simulation of an ocean general circulation model for the earth simulator (OFES) is transformed to an isopycnal coordinate to investigate the spatial structure and seasonal variability of the Mindanao Under- current (MUC). The results show that (1) potential density surfaces, δ0=26.5 and δ0=27.5, can be chosen to encompass the M UC layer. Southern Pacilic tropical water (SPTW), Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) and high potential density water (HPDW) constitute the MUC. (2) Climatologically, the MOC exists in the form of dual-core. In some months, the dual-core structure changes to a single-core structure. (3) Choosing section at 8°N for calculating the transport of the MUC transport is reliable. Potential density constraint provides a good method for calculating the transport of the MOC. (4) The annual mean transport of the MUC is 8.34 × 106 m3/s and varies considerably with seasons: stronger in late spring and weaker in winter. 展开更多

Different advection schemes and two-equation turbulence closure models based on eddy viscosity concept are used to compute the drag coefficient around a circular cylinder at high Reynolds number (106).The numerical results from these simulations are compared with each other and with experimental data in order to evaluate the performance of different combinations of advection scheme and two-equation turbulence model. The separate contributions from form drag and friction drag are also ana-lyzed.The computational results show that the widely used standard k-ε turbulence closure is not suitable for such kind of study, while the other two-equation turbulence closure models produce acceptable results. The influence of the different advection schemes on the final results are small compared to that produced by the choice of turbulence closure method. The present study serves as a reference for the choice of advection schemes and turbulence closure models for more complex numerical simulation of the flow around a circular cylinder at high Reynolds number. 展开更多

Although there have been many observational and modeling studies of gravity waves excited by topograpghy, the detailed structure and its changes in real world are still poorly understood. The interaction of topography and background flow are described in details for a better understanding of the gravity waves observed by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite imagery over Nanling Mountains. The evolutionary process and spatial structure of gravity waves were investigated by using almost all available observational data, including MODIS satellite imagery, the Final Analyses (FNL) data issued by National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), the aerosol backscattering signal data from Lidar, the surface observational data and the sounding data of Nanling mountain regions. In order to study its development mechanism, choosing the initial sounding of Jiangxi Gaizhou station located in the upstream of Nanling regions, and using the Advanced Regional Prediction System (ARPS), the numerical simulation was performed. It is shown that the ARPS model reproduced the main features of gravity waves reasonably well, where the gravity waves and turbulent mixed layer are consistent with the satellite image and the aerosol backscattering signal from Lidar observation. It is well-known that gravity wave-induced turbulence and thus turbulent mixing could affect the local composition of chemical species, which plays a significant role in the formation of low visibility and precipitation associated with local orography. 展开更多

The symmetries and the exact solutions of the (3+l)-dimensional nonlinear incompressible non-hydrostatic Boussi- nesq (INHB) equations, which describe atmospheric gravity waves, are studied in this paper. The calculation on symmetry shows that the equations are invariant under the Galilean transformations, the scaling transformations, and the space-time translations. Three types of symmetry reduction equations and similar solutions for the (3+ 1)-dimensional INHB equations are proposed. Traveling and non-traveling wave solutions of the INHB equations are demonstrated. The evolutions of the wind velocities in latitudinal, longitudinal, and vertical directions with space-time are demonstrated. The periodicity and the atmosphere viscosity are displayed in the (3+1)-dimensional INHB system. 展开更多

The observation data for 5 d at a station in the South China Sea is presented. After brief anMysis of the wind speed, air temperature from the ship-borne meteorological instruments and temperature and salinity profiles from the CTD (conductivity, temperature, depth recorder) data, the authors find that the CTD casts are too sparse for us to understand the diurnal evolution of the thermal structure in the upper ocean. A one-dimensional (1D) numericM code based on Mellor-Yamada turbulence closure model is used to reconstruct the upper ocean thermal structure, utilizing the atmospheric forcing data from ship-borne weather station. The simulation results show good agreement with the observational data; the significance of breaking waves is also briefly discussed. The evolution of turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) and the contribution from shear production and buoy- ancy production are discussed respectively. Finally, several possible factors which might influence the numerical results are briefly analyzed. 展开更多

The wind directional ambiguities are eliminated by a circular median filter algorithm. All data come from ERS - 1/2 scatterometer data collocated pairs with CMCD4 vector. Comparing the results with CMCD4 and ECMWF wind vector, they agree well, which indicates that it is possible to extract wind vector from the ERS-1/2 scatterometer with the neural network method. 展开更多

A bubble-derived Sea Spray Generation Function (SSGF) was deduced, which was integrated into the new wave-dependent SSGF. The effect of sea spray feedback was parameterized by the feedback coefficients A and B. The relationship of A(B) and the wind-sea Reynolds number was derived, which shows that the feedback effect of sea spray is decreasing with the wave developing. New sea spray flux formulae, including the new SSGF and new feedback coefficients, were proposed, which can reveal clearly the influence of wave state on sea spray fluxes. Spray fluxes in the Humidity Exchange Over the Sea (HEXOS) experiment were simulated again, and results show that spray momentum flux is small in this experiment, but spray heat flux is large. Comparisons of the sea spray fluxes calculated by two kinds of formulae in different wave states show that previous wave-independent spray flux formulae are the special cases of the presented new wave dependent formulae for sea spray flnx. 展开更多
