To study the mechanism of rockburst and its spatio-temporal evolution criterion,a rockburst simulation experiment was performed on granite specimens, each with a prefabricated circular hole, under different lateral loads.Using micro camera, acoustic emission(AE)system, and infrared thermal imager, the AE characteristics and thermal radiation temperature migration were studied during the rockburst process. Then, the failure mode and damage evolution of the surrounding rock were analyzed. The results demonstrate that increasing the lateral load can first increase and then reduce the bearing capacity of the hole.In this experiment, the hole failure process could be divided into four periods:quiet, particle ejection, stability failure and collapse.Correspondingly, the AE signals evolved from a calm stage,to have intermittent appearance;then, they were continuous with a sudden increase, and finally increased dramatically. The failure of the surrounding rock was mainly tensile failure, while shear failure tended to first increase and then decrease.Meanwhile, damage to the hole increased gradually during the particle ejection period, whereas damage to the rockburst mainly occurred in the stability failure period. The thermal radiation temperature migration exhibited warming in shallow parts, inward expansion, cooling in the shallow parts with free surface heating, inward expansion,a sudden rise in temperature of the rockburst pits, and finally specimen failure. The initial reinforcement support should fully contribute to surface support.Furthermore,an appropriate tensile capacity and good energy absorption capacity should be established in support systems for high-stress roadways. 展开更多

The shear failure of rocks under both a static triaxial stress and a dynamic disturbance is common in deep underground engineering and it is therefore essential for the design of underground engineering to quantitively estimate the dynamic ModeⅡfracture toughness KⅡCof rocks under a triaxial stress state. However, the method for determining the dynamic KⅡCof rocks under a triaxial stress has not been developed yet. With an optimal sample preparation, the short core in compression(SCC)method was designed and verified in this study to measure the dynamic KⅡCof Fangshan marble(FM)subjected to different hydrostatic pressures through a triaxial dynamic testing system. The formula for calculating the dynamic KⅡCof the rock SCC specimen under hydrostatic pressures was obtained by using the finite element method in combination with secondary cracks. The experimental results indicate that the failure mode of the rock SCC specimen under a hydrostatic pressure is the shear fracture and the KⅡCof FM increases as the loading rate.In addition,at a given loading rate the dynamic rock KⅡCis barely affected by hydrostatic pressures.Another important observation is that the dynamic fracture energy of FM enhances with loading rates and hydrostatic pressures. 展开更多

Interparticle adhesion force has a controlling effect on the physical and mechanical properties of planetary regolith and rocks. The current research on the adhesion force of planetary regolith and rock particles has been primarily based on the assumption of smooth spherical particles to calculate the intergranular adhesion force;this approach lacks consideration for the adhesion force between irregular shaped particles. In our study,an innovative approach was established to directly measure the adhesion force between the arbitrary irregular shaped particles;the probe was modified using simulated lunar soil particles that were a typical representation of planetary regolith. The experimental results showed that for irregular shaped mineral particles, the particle size and mineral composition had no significant influence on the interparticle adhesion force;however, the complex morphology of the contact surface predominantly controlled the adhesion force. As the contact surface roughness increased, the adhesion force gradually decreased, and the rate of decrease gradually slowed;these results were consistent with the change trend predicted via the theoretical models of quantum electrodynamics. Moreover,a theoretical model to predict the adhesion force between the irregular shaped particles was constructed based on Rabinovich’s theory, and the prediction results were correlated with the experimental measurements. 展开更多

The anisotropy induced by rock bedding structures is usually manifested in the mechanical behaviors and failure modes of rocks.Brazilian tests are conducted for seven groups of shale specimens featuring different bedding angles. Acoustic emission (AE) and digital image correlation (DIC) technologies are used to monitor the in-situ failure of the specimens. Furthermore, the crack morphology of damaged samples is observed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results reveal the structural dependence on the tensile mechanical behavior of shales. The shale disk exhibits compression in the early stage of the experiment with varying locations and durations. The location of the compression area moves downward and gradually disappears when the bedding angle increases. The macroscopic failure is well characterized by AE event location results, and the dominant frequency distribution is related to the bedding angle. The b-value is found to be stress-dependent.The crack turning angle between layers and the number of cracks crossing the bedding both increase with the bedding angle, indicating competition between crack propagations. SEM results revealed that the failure modes of the samples can be classified into three types:tensile failure along beddings with shear failure of the matrix, ladder shear failure along beddings with tensile failure of the matrix, and shear failure along multiple beddings with tensile failure of the matrix. 展开更多

Frost heave in water-bearing rock masses poses significant threats to geotechnical engineering. This paper developed a novel three-dimensional(3D)frost model, based on the combined finite-discrete element method(FDEM),to investigate the frost heave process in rock masses where thermal transfer, water migration,water-ice phase transition(ice growth)and ice-rock interaction are explicitly simulated. The proposed model is first validated against existing experimental and analytical solutions, and further applied to investigate path-dependent frost heave behavior under various freezing conditions. Results show that freezing direction plays a vital role in the dynamic ice growth and ice-rock interaction, thus affecting the frost heave behavior. In the top-down freezing regime, ice plugs form first at the crack's top surface, sealing the crack and preventing water migration, which can amplify ice pressure.Parametric studies, including rock Young's modulus,ice-rock friction, and rock hydraulic conductivity, further reveal that the temporal aspects of ice development and rock mechanical response strongly affect ice-rock interaction and hence the frost heave mechanism.Furthermore, some typical phenomena(e.g.water/ice extrusion and frost cracking)can also be well captured in this model. This novel numerical framework sheds new light on frost heave behavior and enriches our understanding of frost heave mechanisms and ice-rock interaction processes within cold environment engineering projects. 展开更多

Life cycle assessments(LCAs)of early-stage technologies can provide valuable insights about key drivers of emissions and aid in prioritizing research into further emissions-reduction opportunities.Despite this potential value, further development of LCA methods is required to handle the increased uncertainty, data gaps, and confidentially of early-stage data. This study presents a discussion of the life cycle carbon footprinting of technologies competing in the final round of the NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE competition-a US$20 million competition for teams to demonstrate the conversion of CO_(2) into valuable products at the scale of a small industrial pilot using consistent deployment conditions, boundaries, and methodological assumptions. This competition allowed the exploration of how LCA can be used and further improved when assessing disparate and early-stage technologies.Carbon intensity estimates are presented for two conversion pathways:(i)CO_(2) mineralization and(ii)catalytic conversion(including thermochemical, electrochemical, photocatalytic and hybrid process)of CO_(2),aggregated across teams to highlight the range of emissions intensities demonstrated at the pilot for individual life cycle stages.A future scenario is also presented, demonstrating the incremental technology and deployment conditions that would enable a team to become carbon-avoiding relative to an incumbent process(i.e.reducing emissions relative to a reference pathway producing a comparable product).By considering the assessment process across a diverse set of teams, conversion pathways and products, the study presents generalized insights about opportunities and challenges facing carbon capture and-utilization technologies in their next phases of deployment from a life cycle perspective. 展开更多
